Led Zep - Never before or since has there been a rock band that combined such breadth of influence, songwriting talent, and musicianship and did it in a way that produced such accessible music. There's no close second.

Therion and Christopher Johannson specifically for his immense talent and unique vision. Of all the metal bands out there I think Therion is the one that is breaking the most new ground in blending styles of music

Pain of Salvation and Daniel Gildenlow specifically. An amazing lead guitarists, a brilliant songwriter, an amazing singer. Is there anything the man can't do? Another band breaking alot of new ground, particularly with their most recent album, BE.

Orphaned Land a band that came from a pretty war torn area of the world and has managed to mix death metal, middle eastern traditional music and orchestral metal is a way that is innovative.

I just also picked up the re-issue of the first 'Violence' cd, Eternal Nightmare. Violence was one of the great speed metal bands of the late 80's-early 90's. Highly recommend it Phil Demmel, their Jackson endorsed guitarist, is also in the band Machine Head.

I can't believe no one has mentioned - RUSH!
I really got into them in 8th grade (1984) and bought my first record - Moving Pictures. For the next year, all I bought were Rush albums. I became totally infatuated with Neil Peart and wanted to play the drums more than anything. But my parents just split up and my Mom couldn't have afforded lessons and a kit. We had a no-name classical guitar laying around the house and they offered a guitar class at my high school, so I started guitar in the Fall of '85. I still remember the first riff I learned - Limelight intro. Rush is an incredible band and will always be my favorite.

Yetanotherone , I hear ya..But I think Van Halen would be a close second when they came out..VH changed my life...I think they picked up Zepplin Ball on ran with it...

I think those three bands just about shaped any heavy music we know...who were inluenced by the Beatles , Cream , Kinks and the Stones ..I think Zep picked up that ball and ran with it.

As much as I like Zep..Sabbath invented my favorite music in the world..Metal..

Deep Purple/Rainbow , Rush , Aerosmith....No neo classical shred , No Prog , No Guns N Roses and the like...

They all had the hand in shaping the things to come

There is so many awesome guitarist..But I think The Divine Trinity of inspiring the majority is ..Jimi , Eddy , Yngwie.

Re: (insert your favorite band here) appreciation

It would be impossible for me to say any one band is my all time favourite band. Some of my favourites include:

Alice in Chains - Awesome songwriting, great vocal harmonies. Jerry Cantrell always sounds good.

Forbidden - One of the most overlooked, and underrated Bay area bands. Musically, they were probably the most technical, and Russ can sing like a motherfucker. I never get tired of listening to Twisted into Form.

Megadeth - We're talking about the true pre-Cryptic Writings Megadeth. yeah, I know some of you like the newer stuff, but I haven't been able to get into anything since Youthanasia. Old Megadeth just plain fucking ruled! I once heard Dave decribe Rust in Peace as like having a nest of hornets in your head. Classic!

Slayer - I totally wore out my LP of Reign in Blood.

Corrosion of Conformity - I was a fan back in the hardcore days. They have become a completely different over the years, going from hardcore to crossover, to thrash, to metal, to heavy southern rock, and have always been awesome. Their latest stuff is like a super heavy Lynyrd Skynyrd. Great songwriters. My favourite is probably Wiseblood.
Sleep!!, That's where I'm a viking!!

Ronnie James Dio
Iron Maiden - I prefer Di'Anno's voice.
