Re: The Levees in New Orleans.

Better tax dollars go to New Orleans than all over the frikin world. There is no question that they will re-build. Is it wise? Maybe not the extent of re-making the whole city. Certain sections will be re-built for all the reasons we all know. Then you have all the sections that may be permanently un-reclamied. This is an economic and sociological disaster we have never dealt with. These are observations and not opinions by me. I would love to see New Orleans re-built, but to what extent?. Re: The Levees in New Orleans.

What it would cost to rebuild New Orleans equals a few months of war with Iraq. THIS IS AN ESPECIALLY IMPORTANT PART OF THE USA. We have a natural responsibility to take care of our own. Its insane to think otherwise. Most of it is dry. The new media has sensationalized this 24/7. Ratings and ad revenue run the show. Check back 3 months from now. Remember that the media just doesn't report news - they spin it out of control to hook as many viewers possible.

I can't think of anything more insensitive to say in this matter than ....

"ugh..its going to cost me tax dollars to rebuild New Orleans."

New Orleans is one of the best places in the world. So you're just gonna have to deal with it. Cheapskates.

I have to agree with Mike unless you have spent significant time in New Orleans you probably just don't get it. New Orleans is a city like no other and it MUST be rebuilt, hopefully better than before. Large parts of the city are relatively undamaged luckily including my section of town as of today the power, water, and phones have been restored. We are eagerly awaiting the ok to return by parish officals so we can start the rebuilding process.

Thanks Shawn. Yes, we were very lucky. I am still not sure about my job but at least the wife has a good job.

+1 I'm originally from New Orleans as stated in my other posts. We personally know several people who are still missing. The phones have been out for almost 2 weeks. Glad to hear phone service is returning. Will try placing calls after I'm through with this post.

Its completely tasteless to think its clever to make references to Zep songs / lyrics. Jimmy Page and Robert Plant are uber wealthy, not changing oil at Jiffy Lube while wishing they were rock stars. ALL of the liberal arts support New Orleans being rebuilt.

You're not the ones missing any relatives and friends. I know how this feels personally. I wouldn't wish this on my worst enemy, much less my JCF "bros".

Some wealthier areas (middle and upper middle class) were also affected by this disaster. Not just what the media has been focusing on.

Anyone who has lived or spent time in New Orleans wants the city rebuilt - no matter the cost. Cost is irrelevent. Iraq is costing U.S. taxpayers a billion dollars per day. Do you get a say in that opinion poll? I thought so. Shut the fuck up unless you are qualified to offer an opinion (you either lived or visited there), not just forming opinions based on what the media feeds the masses. If San Fran, NYC, Chicago, or L.A. were in the same predicament, it would be a non-issue. New Orleans warrants the same respect. Florida sticks out into the Gulf & the Atlantic. We aren't going to let the gators have it next time a Cat 5 hits FL. And we're not going to lose New Orleans either. This is an important part of America culturally and historically, not just some bullshit generic geographic location.

Re: The Levees in New Orleans.

I didn't think it was clever, it just popped in my head when I saw the thread title. It happens whenever I hear the word levee. I'm not very often "sorry" but I am now if you were offended (and I almost never give a shit if I offend people either).
The city must 100% be rebuilt. I visited once for super bowl whatever # a couple years ago and I immediately loved it, and I was about to apply to go to Tulane next year. I got an email from them saying they are resuming their admissions stuff, but I doubt they will be up to speed by next fall.

It just pissed me off to have the dire situation trivalized. Phones are still dead. One person we know indirectly is asssumed drowned.

I want to still be able to induldge in the best food on the fucking planet. That happens to be in New Orleans.

Good luck if you get into Tulane. You'll enjoy it. Check out Fat Harry's and Cooter Browns.

Chicago, did have the same predicament. October 8, 1871. The Great Chicago Fire decimated the city. The loss of life was mercilessly low. But the city, and world, took away some serious learnings from the tragedy. The will of the city was not broken, within weeks homes were being built out of brick and stone. (If it weren't for the fire, most of the city's crowning jewel, Grant Park, wouldn't be there. - most of the land east of Michigan Ave are actually the ashes and debris from the fire)

Re-building New Orleans over the current topography is a moot gesture. More storms will come, levees will break again, flood waters will return. Maybe after this current tragedy more people will be apt to heed the warnings and get out of the city. But what city engineers need to take away from this tragedy is that it's going to take a hurculean engineering project to bring the whole city above sea level.

Dude, Tulane will be up to speed and running full tilt next semester and for sure by next fall. Go ahead and apply, it is a great school to go to. The part of Uptown where Tulane is located took very little damage and was dry.
