If San Fran, NYC, Chicago, or L.A. were in the same predicament, it would be a non-issue.

Re-building New Orleans over the current topography is a moot gesture. More storms will come, levees will break again, flood waters will return. Maybe after this current tragedy more people will be apt to heed the warnings and get out of the city. But what city engineers need to take away from this tragedy is that it's going to take a hurculean engineering project to bring the whole city above sea level.

Yes, its a massive undertaking to bring back the whole city to above sea level. It took decades for the area to sink several feet below sea level - wasn't always this way. The engineering is advanced enough by today's standards to make things right. That's the correct strategy to make major improvements. In addition to a completely modernized and upgraded levee / drainage system. Must withstand a Cat 5 hurricane as well as pump & drain water like a mofo!

There used to be a running joke that the reason the Saints lost most of the time is because the Superdome is built on an ancient Indian burial ground site. Don't know if this is simply urban myth, could just be that they perpetually suck. Hey, I love my hometown, just realistic about the NFL laughing stock. They did win this weekend, so maybee there is hope.

Both the Superdome and Morial Convention Center need to be bulldozed and new modern replacements established to symbolize new beginnings. Los Angeles has the Staples Center. For those not familar with them, Staples is an office supply giant similar to Office Depot, Office Max, etc. It was a win / win situation for everyone. The city gets modern facilities, the corporation get massive advertising exposure. Likewise, New Orleans needs a large corporate sponsor to underwrite the expense of establishing new sports and convention centers.
