Re: Why New Orleans must be rebuilt

[ QUOTE ]
I thought they needed to rebuild New Orleans so they could keep making those Girls Gone Wild videos.

[/ QUOTE ]

The asshole who puts that stuff out is based in Los Angeles. New Orleans was just another place his organization preyed off of stupid young girls getting wasted at dance clubs / dive bars. You've got that element all over: ie: Florida Spring Break, etc.

[ QUOTE ]
My question is this... Where is all the money going to come from to rebuild an entire city? This project is going to be insanely expensive, especially if they take the proper precautions to adjust the land and make it so that something like this doesn't happen again.

[/ QUOTE ]

Born & raised in N.O. Bush has spent 400 BILLION thus far of taxpayer money on Iraq. It cost 1 BILLION PER DAY as long as the war continues. Bush finds the money for Iraq. And he doesn't ask public permission either. New Orleans must be built better & smarter while retaining all desirable qualities and cleaning up the undesirable ones.

[ QUOTE ]
Amen.

I actually can't wait to see how areas like the lower 9th ward are going to come back...and come back with a new glory. My prediction is that within a decade New Orleans will be radically different...but nicer, safer and cleaner.

What is sad is that most of Lakeview got trashed. And there were some really nice houses out there. That area took the brunt of the hit from the 17th street canal....

Mike

[/ QUOTE ]

Its sad Lakeview & Old Metairie got water damage. My old stomping grounds. Know a lot of people who live here and have to deal with the mess. The middle class get the worst end of the deal.

It would have cost less, to make proper levies, than to rebuild it.

If the Federal government would have made building an upgraded modern levy system to withstand a cat 5 a priority instead of doing a feasiblity study on the twin spans instead, this could have all been prevented. Now its going to cost MUCH more cause they kept refusing to provide the funding several years ago.

Re: Why New Orleans must be rebuilt

And when the city planning commission gets 2 proposals - one that says to spend money building proper dams instead of dirt levees, and another one that says they can dress up a port on the river to house a floating casino and make money, they're going to forget about spending money on the levees.

Another problem is the time between major disasters. Betsy was what, '65? Camille was how long ago?
They're looking at statistics and probability, and they've had "experts" telling them that "the big one is coming" for decades. People have also been saying "the End is nigh" for quite some time.
Same situation, different circumstances, but the same response from the "leaders": "Yeah, sure, whatever you say " and then when it DOES happen, the "experts" say "I told you so".

Now, if the "experts" can get together and define a time-frame and some specifics and present accurate data that narrows it down to WHEN it was going to happen, maybe they'd get a better response, but until then, you're gonna see a lot more of this stuff happen, and the politicians who didn't jump when every Chicken Little said the sky was falling are gonna bear and share the blame.

sure.... predicting when a Category 5 hurricane is gonna make landfall within the next 10 years is a piece of cake..I mean, they ARE scientists.

this is't a matter of when! because IT WILL happen again. So fucking be ready.

And the stupid asses in D.C had better support any safety measure ANY city takes when defending themselves against natural OR unatural disaster. or I'll get unatatural on their lying weak asses!

Re: Why New Orleans must be rebuilt

exactly Drip...it won't matter if its next month or next century...it IS going to happen, you can count on it so you had better be prepared.

To be the insensitive fuck that I am, the bigger catastrophe was the way the people decided to stay behind for whatever reasons acted after impact, the looting, killing, shooting at rescue worker etc. If my town acted like that, I'd say fuck it, don't rebuild force the scum out to other places then rebuild later

The other sad thing is the way the whole thing was managed from every level of government, local, city, state and federal. The deal in NO was a failure of years of not doing anything about the levees. Hurricane Andrew was just as devastating to Florida but you didn't see all the TV specials raising money for the city of Homestead that virtually got wiped off the map. NO was flood damage based on year's poor planning maintenance

Everyone needs to look this and pinpoint the failures, how and why the failed and fix it. People were left to die due to slow response times, give them morphine and let them die..how fucked up is that? It's pretty damn sad when a hurricane can potentially send a country to its knees and into an economic recession.
