      Re: Favorite Strings

EB 9-42, strats and LP type guitars. Hybrids, on my tele, love the soft feel of the slinkies and they bend so nice. the nickel ones are nice but don't have the same feel, I have 20 sets of D'addarios as well as about 20 sets of slinkies, I am going to string a few guitars withe D'As and keep an open mind,
I say the boy ain't right!

        Re: Favorite Strings

man, i rust both great feeling Balls And now D'Addario. But i use either of those 9-46 for my Petrucci and strat, and straight up 10s for my Les Paul.

        i'm too poor (i.e. cheap)
for Elixirs, but i need to find a longer lasting, good feeling string. man.

                  Re: Favorite Strings

GHS Boomer 10-46 ever since about 1983, same gauge regardless of E or Eb tuning

I've tried other brands of strings w/o any luck. I don't buy into the rumor that there is only one string manufacture that makes ALL strings. If that were the case then when tuned up the Floyds should be exactly level with the bodies regardless of the name on the package and I found that to not be the case and yes, every sting in the other packages were the same gauge.

I've also tried going to GHS Boomer 9's a few times over the years but every time I did, I'd break strings too easily, even once I got used to the tone differences

                    Jeez, you guys are fags!
Real men like me use the light stuff.
My current strings of choice are Ernie Ball Stainless Steel Extra Slinkies. I've been curious about Rotosound, so I might try a set of their strings soon.
Anyway, I am a proud user of .008s. Standard, E flat, drop D, they do everything I need them to do. They never break, they have excellent clarity, I have no loss of sustain or "tone", I can get monstrous bends and perform insane Floyd pyrotechnics with no problem, they have incredible speed, they're just perfect.
Okay, here's the real reason I use .008s. I have stubby, weak fingers. It took me the longest time to be able to even play an F barre chord. I'm not handicapped or anything, my hands just suck. I can handle the tension of heavier sets, like Power Slinkies or Skinny Top/ Heavy Bottom. I can bend them easily, it's just that my hands get "stuck", I don't know how to describe it, they just freeze up, and I get frustrated. To compensate for this, I use the extra light strings. Even with these flimsy wires, I play with an extremely light touch. I apply just enough force to get a note out. Plus, I bend strings almost excessively, I break 10's too often and I broke a high E on a set of 11's within hours. The final reason is because two players I greatly admire use .008s. These people are Allan Holdsworth and Alex Hutchings. I thought, if they're good enough for Allan, they're good enough for me. Also, Billy Gibbons, Tony Iommi, Yngwie Malmsteen, Jeff Beck, and Frank Zappa have all used .008's (or in the case of Zappa, even lighter) in their career.

TLDR, I use .008's because they kick ass (and because I am a pansy)

                      9 - 46 on my Jacksons
                      9 - 42 on my Charvel

I've always used Boomers. I couldn't find the 9 - 46 boomers for awhile so I went to EB Hybrid Slinkys, but that's been awhile back. I'm currently experimenting with other brands, I put some DR Red Devils on my Charvel recently and can't wait to get them off. I'll be back home from the road tonight and that's one of the first things I'll do because the Red Devils suck!

                          Nice threadsurrection!

                          I use 9-42 boomers for E, Eb, Drop D
Lower tunings get heavier gauge strings.
I like Boomers because I hardly ever break one, and I can re-string and tune without the stretch, tune, stretch routine.
I'm trying a set of Elixir (sp?) 9-42 on my Charvel. So far they're good, but the coating feels odd to me.
