Man,
The authorities are worried about it here in Austin - 4 hrs from the coast! I think we're talking wind damage/trees down and TONS of rain. I can't imagine what else could reach us up here

Got my peeps from Victoria Caravanning up here in RVs and bringing their horses Looks to be a cozy weekend with the relatives

Yeah, just got off the phone with my parents in Austin (where my sis is headed) and they expect at least cat-1 force winds even there... my brother might be heading up there too now. Gonna be some serious gridlock!!!

They are saying like 1 million people are moving north from the houston area alone. If Texas City or any of the refinery areas of Houston get bashed gas is gonna go through the roof. Hope for the best prepare for the worst. Anyone in an iffy area trying to ride it out be careful.

Especially when you tell them to put extra olive salad on it and then heat up the sandwich for you. Napoleon House on Chartres has great ones too (some claim even better than Central).

Frommer's Review

Folklore has it that the name of this place derives from a bit of wishful thinking: Around the time of Napoleon's death, a plot was hatched here to snatch the Little Corporal from his island exile and bring him to live in New Orleans. The third floor was added expressly for the purpose of providing him with a home. Alas, it probably isn't true: The building dates from a couple of years after Napoleon's death. But let's not let the truth get in the way of a good story, or a good hangout, which this is at any time of day, but particularly late at night, when it's dark enough to hatch your own secret plans. Somewhere between tourist-geared and local-friendly, it serves large portions of adequate versions of traditional New Orleans food (po' boys, jambalaya), plus the only heated muffuletta in town.

Re: Lovely Rita

I just got a small taste of this tonight. Houses all around me on my block do not have power as a transformer blew out. six blocks up the main road we live off, they have flash flooding with up to 1-2 foot deep water. Gas mains are blown, high power lines are down.. uprooted trees and power poles blocking major roads. The fire dept shut down travel in Fridley which is the suburb right next to where we live.
There are a couple major roads in the area that are impassible. The airport has diverted flights for the time being to Rochester..80-90 miles south.

We've had (and some areas still having) 70-80mph straight line/sheer winds hit our area for about 30-45 minutes with hail 1-3"... Some areas are getting 5" hail.
The torando threat was the most scary.. it came up so fast that from the time my gf woke me up from my TV nap to the time I could pack 4 guitars and get ready to leave...about 20-30 mins... we were in the thick of it and the hail and rain was fierce so we decided to ride it out. You never knew trees, large trees could be so flexible. The power flickered quite a few times and went out a couple times..but we pulled thru and have no major damage as far as I can tell in the dark other than a few shakes to the place and some branches laying about... thankfully that was all. Areas very close to where we live were not so lucky. 3ft diameter trees were snapped and a few homes were destroyed.

This is nothing compared to what is heading to the coast.
If anyone here is in the path of this hurricane and it's possible aftermath as a tropical storm and their tornados...please take it seriously..hurricane 1-2 catagory winds are bad enough..but you are taking a roll of the dice with Cat 5+ (it will be stronger than it is now!!)
Get packed..head north and bring alot of water and canned goods with you as well as a some stashed savings or a few things to sell. Watch out for your pets too.
Be safe..

Gas just hit $2.25/L here in Nova Scotia. Holy crap - over $9.00/gallon.

I guess I'll be riding my motorcyle for a while.

Never had a Muff at the Napolean House as their is no need, Central Grocery is simply the best. When I think of the Napolean House I think of Pimm's Cups.

And NO, you do not heat up a Muffaletta. I can't stand them hot..and light on the olive salad..it can be overpowering. I guess it is all a matter of opinion.

Damn, my old stomping grounds. I grew up between Galveston and Houston. If you are anywhere near the projected path of this thing:

EVACUATE !!!! Get the hell out of dodge. 165 MPH winds will blow your house right off it's foundation.

Those poor people are going to run out of gas while they are getting out. Why not get gas tanker trucks out there to fill'em up.
