Why does my cable modem get slower and slower?

i have a motorola surfboard. It usually maxes out around 3.5 meg. At the end of the week its down to around 385k. If I reset the modem then it goes back to 3.5 meg for a bit. is there a way to fix so I don't have to reset?

Since cable modems works off of a node your connection speed is based on how many people are actually using their internet and how much bandwith they are consuming. So there will definately be fluctuation. I does sound weird that you state it just goes down. I would totally understand if it went down and then came up again. Maybe resetting your modem gives your connection preference which is lost as more people use up the bandwith, not sure but just a thought. I guess I should have paid more attention in my Data Communications Course.

That's the ONLY reason I LOVE living in the ghetto, no one around me hardly has a computer or can afford to pay for high speed for the one they have. My cable modem speed flies!!!!!!!!!

if you have a wireless router on your home network, your neighbors are using your cable modem to acces the net for free [img]/images/graemlins/smile.gif[/img] They are downloading porn on your bandwidth, when you power cycle the cable modem you are kickin them off the network [img]/images/graemlins/smile.gif[/img] [img]/images/graemlins/smile.gif[/img] I hate when my neighbors kill the power on their DSL modem because I have to search for another access point close by....

I'm pretty sure its something fucked with the modem itself. I have the wireless set up to not broadcast the SID and I have an access list setup so no random dudes can use it.

Enable WEP security on your WAP to guard against neighbors using it. My wireless router is a cheapy (SMC) but I can get a good signal out in my garage, and my neighbors are closer than that.

Everything Keith said is correct, and you will see fluctuations based on other peoples use within your subnet. But if the thing is slowing down for no reason, I would look at either you modem being defective or your PC has got a virus infection. Then again, someone on your subnet may have one too, and your getting a "ping of death" which will also effect your connection speed.

True story. The FBI raided one of my neighbors house, seized all their machines. Rumor was they were busted for some kind of illegal German porn. They are good people and don't do that, the people who live next door to them, were tapping into their wireless network without them knowing. A couple days after the raid, the people next door took off the plates on their vehicles (Range Rover and Jag) and high tailed outta there [img]/images/graemlins/smile.gif[/img] Cars still in the driveway too...

and yeah...cable is shared bandwidth but if you get 3.5 Mbps and it slowly degrades and a power cycle restores it to 3.5 Mbps chances are its not local network saturation, something local...either your modem, machine or neighbor downloading German porn [img]/images/graemlins/smile.gif[/img]

I actually noticed mine slows a bit at times too. I'm in a bit of a secluded area. i have 5 neighbors and then nothing for a couple of blocks. I think it's just a lot of people getting on. I restart my cpu and modem every day and that really seems to help.
