a hobby thats actually more expensive than mine.
Lets go back in time a little bit: My wife bought a brand new 2002 Z24 Cavalier. She never took care of it. And I mean NEVER. This is also multiplied by the fact the car was a turd to begin with. As soon as the warranty was gone, the parts soon followed. To date, I have replaced: brakes & rotors on all 4 corners, both power window motors, power sunroof motor, 2 wheel bearings, 1 axle shaft, power door lock solenoid, alternator, and yes, the cylinder head. Well, the differential started taking a shit last week making a horrible grinding noise unless you were making right hand turns. Enough is enough. I was tired of throwing good money after bad.
It was obvious we needed to buy her a new car ( which in turn shot me in the foot for getting a new Dodge Charger...but, my curent car does run and drive great...no biggie, necessity comes before wants ).
Originally, we were going to look at a Hyundai Tiberon. Yeah, I know, but, the 10 year 100,000 mile warranty spoke to me....and you get a lot of bang for the buck. Had a meeting set up with a salesman at a huge dealer ( Ricart Auto Mall ), which has many dealerships in Columbus. We pull into the Chevrolet side to get directions to the Import lot. As soon as I walk back out the door, I notice my wife is out on the lot looking at a car. Her eyes glazed over, saliva dripping from her teeth, and this overall entranced expression on her face. You know the look, its the same look we get when we walk in a guitar store loaded with Jacksons.
There it was. A base model Chevy Cobalt 2 door coupe. Why was she so obsessed over this car? It was bright yellow with black stripes, big spoiler, huge ground effects kit and 18" Enkie wheels ( Yup, The Fast and Furious looking thing). I would say with the external add-ons, there was about $3500 worth of stuff there plus cost of labor.
Internally, it is still a base model. Only ammenities are power door locks, A/C and CD player. It has the basic gray interior. You know, the kind that you see in a rental car. No power windows, no power mirrors, nuttin.....nada. Trivial, things ,but, nice things to have.
Well, after some negotiating with sales, we got them to come down to $15,195 tax/title included. Not , bad...but, I kept reminding my wife, " This is a base model". Are you sure you don't want to look at the other car?
Nope. She was sold. As per her reply to the base interior: "Honey, you work on cars. You can build my interior for me and make it look hot. Then we will look at making it go fast and you can teach me along the way. " What the...?!?!?! Did my wife really just say what I think she said. She is into tuning now?!?! When did this happen? But, she seems to be serious as she is surfing and pricing accessories like a woman going through a " Clearance " rack at an outlet store. Hmmm...maybe there is hope for her yet.-Lou
