my chimney is causing me some problems tonite...
just lighted it up, and it started smoking like insane!!
it's a soapstone-chimney, and it used to work fine two days ago....

anyone got an idea what's up there?
there was no smoke on the roof at first, it started to work later, but the whole house was full of smoke way before. from the cellar up to the roof...

something weird; the chimneys front started getting wet?!?
WTF?

had to put it out for now, but I still wonder how problems like this can show up in two days?!

now someone tell me why I go on the balkon for having a smoke, feels really stooopid now...

Bird nest? Critters making a home in the pipe? Did you open the damper all the way? Can we all say "Chimney Sweep"?

sure, flue was opened, and no santa... satan maybe...

I doubt it's a birdnest, since which bird can built such a thing in two days?
I'm not a bird, but I doubt they can do it so fast...

Maybe not, but you'd be surprised how quick birds can build a nest. Those fuckers built one in my dryer vent one time and I couldn't figure out why my clothes weren't drying all that quick. I checked the vent on the back of my house, saw straw sticking out, and there was even a long flat rock in front of the nest with two baby birds in it. How they got the flap open and the rock in there was beyond me! I took it out, and they tried putting a new nest in there a few days later.
I feel my soul go cold... only the dead are smiling.

I think I need the chimney-man to come and have a look.
I still got no clue, what went wrong there...

and someone got an idea about the wet soapstone? this one really made me dwell a while...

Re: smoke everywhere....

The moisture is probably condensation. Almost everything that burns will put out some amount of water vapor, & the soapstone may be cool enough to cause some of it to condense as the smoke backs up. What fuel are you burning?

Re: smoke everywhere....

If this is the first time you fired it up, it probably is just the fireplace sweating out whatever moisture it picked up now that it was heated on the inside?

Re: smoke everywhere....

I used to have a wood stove in my basement and had the same problem after I hadn't started it in a while. Filled the whole basement w/smoke. The reason it did this, at least in my case, was because I didn't get a big enough or hot enough fire going to begin with. You need to get the fire running hot and do it quickly...The reason for this is that the hotter the air gets the quicker it will rise/get sucked out of the chimney. You probably already knew this though since it seems this isn't your first year with a fireplace.

Re: smoke everywhere....

yeah, maybe it wasn't hot enough I'm not sure, but I didn't do anything different to two days ago, when everything was just working fine...
guess I'll need to have another look tomorrow. maybe there really was a bird in the chimney, I'm gonna check this in the cellar tomorrow, when I'm able to breath down there again...

thx for your ideas everyone.
