There is nothing remotly close to Sabbath Bloddy Sabbath, Iron Man, Sinner, Stained Class, The Trooper, Hallowed Be Thy Name on any Lep Zep record as far as Heavy Metal goes

Also we are not talking about Evanesance Lyric's. It takes more then a heavy guitar sound and dark lyric's to be a True Metal band

lyrics don't make metal, guitar riffs make metal, Sabbath IS HEAVY METAL, Symptom of the universe is the perfect example, palm muting and MEAN sounding power chords

i think the lyrics are an important aspect as well because songs like angel of death would have been laughed at without those lyrics.

starrider - again another example of what i was saying - what we'd call call classic rock/blues rock alot of people did call heavy metal - led zep 2 was called heavy metal when it first came out but we all alugh at that now...

Metal is and its disciples are dedicated beyond belief and will NOT bend. Not any "metalhead" I know of.

Metal to me started with Black Sabbath , Spooky Tooth , Iron Butterfly , Steppenwolf , Led Zep , Wishbone ash..it was about high calibre musical skill levels and imagery..but with musical substance being priority.

It is pure in nature and the metal that I am referring to is as unique as it comes no matter what TRUE metal genre..

It is NOT about fame , it is not about money , it is not about what is popular..it is the "anti-pop" of music. It was born of rebellion and has never left there since...without losing focus of what is most important , originality , creativity , substance and striving to be profiecent at their craft be it Guitar , Drums , bass vocalist..ect..

it has evolved into many genres and sub genres ...but all those genres whether you like it or not are amoung the elite of their craft because it is a labor of love..and was influened by the greats before them..always striving to take up to the next level ..and never to sell out or dummy down for the sake of popuarity..Popular music..."POP" music.

What becomes "popular" becomes homogenize and watered down for easy mass consumption..It's all about money..not talent or skill level..

True Metal is a mix of angst / rebellion / musicianship / mindset...and to most great bands imagery comes last ..with the exception of Kiss who actually wern't really that good and relied on a "show" more than anything..and they wrote catchy tunes..and look how gay and homogenized those guys became when they got popular..especially when the sold out and did a disco song..Metal in anti disco. If you went to my high school with tha disco shit..I'd beat your ass to the chanting crowd of my stoner / metalhead bros..we would torment you like demons until you peed yourself..That's metal! Bands such as Sabbath , old Rush , AC/DC , Led Zep , Judas Priest , Iron Maiden , Rainbow , Deep Purple , Van Halen BOC , sowed the seeds to metal and what is the common bond in all of that ..highly skilled musicianship..imagery ...and attitude!!

Hair metal put "Image" before music..bands wanted to out pretty one another ..that's not fucking metal that is just plain gay. But that shit was promoted like nuts. It killed headnagers ball...Savatage , Accept , Preist , Dio , Malmsteen , Kind Diamond , Maiden , Helloween , Queensryche , Scorions , Anthrax , videos were replace by .. by Poinson , Warrant , Prett Boy Floyd , Enuff Z Nuff..Nuff said right there..

Even That Dick Ricky whatever his name of headnagers ball protested ..but he was ordered to play that crap..after it was on constant rotaion all day...all day...they played the same video on HBB they played all day...HBB was reserved for "metal" intially remeber...as soon as those made up cross dressing FAGS came onto the scene ..POOF Headbangers ball was Dead , Z Rock was Dead..and then came the birth of the piot smokin' anti FAG.."Grunge"..flannell shirts , sweaters , no shaving , no hairspray , no lipstick , no solos..no musicianship...lame....lame...lame..

Then metal attempted to make a comeback and went Nu or Rap "metal"..which consisted of angst withouth musical substance..it was all image and the almighty buck..and it all sounded the same old bullshit..it was pure shit..any hack could play.

Now Metal is finally making a comeback..it's cool to wear a slayer or maiden shirt now..guitar solos are cool again..musicianship is cool again..now you can see all your favorite videoes you haven't seen for 15 years on Metal Mania and some of Headbangers ball..maybe two decent vids..and the rest is Emo core now..they did it again....they did it again

I remebered right when Headbangers Ball came back on ..it was like 1987 all over again not only did they play "Tage / YJM / Diamond ..they added Evergrey / Nevermore / Dream Theatre / Lamb Of God / Slayer / Megadeth / Kreator , Testament / Exodus and so on...but that was just to get your attention..so all the labels can buy out all the air time and plug their cookie cutter BS again for their no talented BS again in a new form Emo core / Hate core...which every bands sounds and looks the same..like I didn't see that coming!!!

But I can say this..I'll take Emo core over "Rap" metal because at least I can understand these white kids again..they droppen the glorified ebonical BS...so at least...at least...there is something for everybody...white kids can talk like white kids again and be.."cool"..they have something that was written by them for them to identify with instead of being force feed ebonics everyday for 13 years and nothing but..now they can wear a maiden T shirt and NOT kick their ass kicked!!!

Hey it's cool if you like Rap , especially black folks..they write that stuff..they identify with that..but now at least the white kids have some music of their own now...something for eveyone..

The term "hair metal" is so gay!! Most of the bands that were around during that period really are NOT metal! There were some cool hard rock bands, but I don't consider Ratt, Van Halen, Motley Crue, Dokken, etc. metal.

i'm not quite sure how race has much to do with it but i sorta see what ur saying about what metal is about but i must say i thought the point of hair metal WAS the guitar hero and the highest musicianship - where speed flash and the guitar solo was king...

How can you say its not about race..I worked and live in a Urban cty..The entire 90's was infected by the ebonic plague..white kids had nothing to call their own..if my kid wen't to a public school..he would be outnumbered and come home talking like Emenem. He would ne mocked or picked on because he wouldn't like their music...my kid likes METAL..that is what he is exposed to and is one hell of a metal drummer..

and id he came home talkin' like that I'd beat his ass..so he's fucked at school and at home..

Emenem was a product of this very issue..that little dweeb couldn't fight his way out of a wet paper bag..it was a matter If I can't beat 'em..join 'em.

Now both white and black kids have music of their own..finally they have an option..not just R&B / Hip Hop / Rap / ...or the best joke of all Rap.."metal".
