It's a blue and white G3 not a beige. I have read that there has been a lot of success with them vs. the beige. I'm probably going to sell it anyway. I got it for practically a song

well, i really don't record (let alone play) much music anymore, so for what i do (which isn't shit, really), garageband is great.

If it's a first generation Blue and White (slower than 350MHZ), you need to get a CPU upgrade card to get OS X to install... Not worth it in my opinion.
Ebay it... someone will buy it.

I got 10.2 loaded on my old Beige G3 with XPostFacto then upgraded that to Tiger and it worked fine. Now I've been playing with OSX86 and so far it looks great!

Re: Mac techheads I need your help

Never tried XPostFacto before. Cool that they found a way around the old world vs. new world ROM issue.
What kind of performance do you get from it?
My thing is, I don't care if you can install it, how fast does it run and how many services do you have to strip out of it to get it to run smoothly... that's the issue.
There's lean and mean, and then there's stripped and barely functional. Early versions of PearPC required OSX to be stripped to the bone to run, now I can get Photoshop CS to run in it with the equivilent performance of my iBook.
I've tried the OSX86 hacks on my home system to get it working, but no luck. I've got the right CPU (3.2GHz P4) , but it doesn't appear to like my ATI (256MB Radeon 9550) video card. I can get it running in VMWare, which is cool, but still a bit too slow to be useful.
I'm sticking with PearPC for my Mac needs on my home PC for now.
I sold my iBook a couple of months ago and I'm still kicking myself for it.

Re: Mac techheads I need your help

I recently tried Xpostfacto on the G3 I mentioned earlier. No success, same corrupted video. The thing works with 9.1 though so it's got to be a driver issue. I don't know how to change install drivers on a Mac

Re: Mac techheads I need your help

The performance on the G3 isn't great, but it wasn't that great with 9.2 either

The XPostFacto is only temporary to allow the install of OSX to begin then it's not used any longer when running OSX.

I also have a P4 3.2, w/2GB RAM and x600 and it runs ok in Vmware, but I don't use it for much, just testing. The no sound is the most annoying thing. So I run it native without Vmware and get sound, no QE or CI though, but better performance.

You must have been under a rock for the last few months.
OSX86, as it's called by many, is the new version of OS X designed to run on Intel hardware. Scheduled to go on sale publicly in late 2006 or early 2007.
Currently is only available to Apple Developers and hackers of course.
It's hardware locked to run only on Apple provided developer kits, but many have already cracked it to run on normal PC's. It has some limitations, but does run nicely with standard off the shelf components.
Just Google OSX86... be prepared for tons of WAREZ and pRoN ads all over yer screen. Apple can't shutdown the bittorrent sites fast enough.

All this is because Apple dropped the PowerPC CPU and is going to Intel CPU's. The new "Mactels" are supposed to go on sale late next year.

oh! yeah, that. i did know about that a few months ago (read the press release), but didn't know of the 86 part. i need to see if the pc that i have will run that; i'd much rather have it run that than windows xp.
