• Buying from the Clearance Pile

Ok, laugh if you want, but I bought a Sony CD350 digital camera from Wal-Mart tonight. It was on their Clearance table in a box marked "Display" (it was the in-store display model).
I inspected it before buying it - even had them plug it in to make sure it worked - but it wouldn't power on when plugged in, and the battery had long since drained. However, the Battery Charge light was on when plugged in, so I know it's getting juice.
Since I knew nothing previously of this particular camera, I bought it ($175, marked down from $400, with all the accessories in the box - cables & 2 discs) hoping it was just one of those times where the camera can't be used with the AC adaptor, only with the battery.

Sooo I got it home and read the book and it does say it can run off the AC. However, it's still not powering on. I put a disc in it, I've removed and re-injected the battery, and I've read the Troubleshooting guide, however, I won't know for sure if anything's really wrong until the battery is charged (2.5 hours charge time, been charging for about an hour or more now).

Has anyone tried getting Sony to fix a camera? Has anyone tried getting Sony to fix anything bought on Clearance? There's a big white sticker on the inside of the box that says not to return it to the store if it has a problem, but to call Service and Tech Support.

I went to the site and poked through the FAQ and such, but nothing there fits except to send it in for service.

The chick at Wal Mart said if it didn't work to just bring it back within 30 days, but I know Wal-Mart and IIRC they have a "No Return" policy for Clearance items.
Besides, if Sony can fix it for free or cheap, then I've got a $400 camera for maybe half price.

i've sent a few cameras to sony in the past. they were good to deal with and the charge wasn't outrageous for out of warranty work. they wouldn't pickup return shipping though.

Cool

I went ahead and sent the service request online. I'll mail the camera out today and see what they say.

Got lucky with my $70 camera at Target. Last one display just like yours - but no issues.

Ok so heres what you do... you go to Walmart or any other store who sells the camera brand new, and buy it. Go home, put your camera in place of the new one you just bought, and return it. Works like a charm every time, just make sure the store you buy it from doesent have a restocking fee.

I have never been inside a Sony camera but I have spent many hours inside Sony computer monitors and they were probably one of the worst to work on.

Don't know much about Sony's repair service, but don't ever lose the software for the camera.

My lil' sis is a restaurant manager and she took home a camera that no one had claimed and had been sitting in their lost and found area for months. She asked me for help in locating the software for that model (she's blonde and didn't know how ). I thought for sure I'd be able to download it from their site but nooooooooooooooooo! Those bastards wanted $50 for it. Fifty fudckin' bucks!!! The camera was free so I said WTF and bought the software for her as a gift. But still, they should make that shit available for download from their site.

I paid $400 for my camera a couple of years ago and I'll be damned if I'd pay that if my disc was lost or damaged. Fuckers!

I don't buy Sony anymore. The phones, cd players, VCRs, etc that I have owned all failed to work properly after a year or two. I know others that have experienced the same. I think they are living off thier former great name. However, Sony ES is still good from what I hear.

Re: Buying from the Clearance Pile

Ok, they want $686.09 for the repair. I paid $192 for the camera, and can buy 3 from Ebay right now that work for less than $400 each.

And yeah, I hear ya about their hardware that stops working 91 days later - I've got a 5-CD/Radio/Dual-cassette unit with wood speaker cabinets (particle board/presswood but hey, they're wood) that I bought new for $450 back in late '99. Shortly into 2000 it developed an issue where it'd play the first track of a CD and then skip backwards, and if it did get to track 2, it'd skip back to track 1. I'd hafta start a CD on track 3 or 4, and even then it'd skip back after a while.
Now it serves as my video game sound system and occasional radio.
The best feature about it is the speakers - everyone else was making plastic cabinets and these are made of wood, and you can really hear the difference.

Anyhoo, looks like I'll hafta take the camera back to Wal-Mart
