hi there

alright, this is the thing. i've been sick for about one week now, but the last two days were the worst. quite a bad cold, so nothing really serious - lots of headache, and an overall dizziness (sp?) included.
the thing is, my drummer just told me that our next show (friday evening, so 2 days from now on) will be both filmed and recorded, possibly (or better said) likely for some live bonus footage, maybe even a bonus dvd with the whole concert for our next record. perfect timing, it seems [img]/images/graemlins/wink.gif[/img]
obviously i'll have to do my very best, and thats quite difficult if don't get any better until friday.
any recommendations and advice?

another point is that i tend to be more of an entertainer on stage rather than a musician, meaning that i don't give a crap if i hit all notes 100% correct as long as the stage show is good. with an attitude like that, having a show both recorded and filmed can be quite embarassing [img]/images/graemlins/wink.gif[/img] fact is, people out there don't notice any small clams, but they do notice your stage presence. on a recording those small clams CAN be heared, though. so my question is, what do you think should i focus on, stage presence or mistake free performance? i'm leaning towards stage acting, as there's always the possibilty to edit an audio recording [img]/images/graemlins/laugh.gif[/img]

drink lots of water, 5-6 litres a day. also eat regularly every 3 hours, even if you don't have much of an apetite, make sure you force yourself to have at least a small meal every 3 hours.
Remember, your immune system is struggling to kill the bacteria and needs fuel (nutritious food) to do so.

also in relation to that, don't do anything really physical like running/lifting..just relax as much as possible. Watch a movie or whatever. And make sure your body temperature is comfortable (if you have a fever you don't wanna be sitting in a 30 C room [img]/images/graemlins/laugh.gif[/img] and vice versa.)

You should also try to focus positive mental energy on getting better, you'll get well soon. Think of all the fun you'll have at the show. If you get down on yourself or have really negative thoughts, worrying that everything will go to shit, not able to perform properly, feeling sorry for yourself being sick etc. then it is a chance that this will also prolong your sickness.
This might sound weird to some, but it is my experience not only for myself, but also as a coach for professional competing powerlifters who have been sick right before a meet, etc.

As far as the stage show vs. accuracy, I'd say you'd have to find a middle road...you can headbang all you want, if I can't hear the music then I would generally say a band stink.
This usually applies to players like ourselves though, the "metalhead" would probably be just as happy if you fuck up some parts but go crazy on stage.

The numero uno thing you need to do is not stress your immune system so it can do it's job. Worrying about the show will stress you more (this is why Rune's good mental imagery advice is so awesome).
You can promote healing with plenty of healthy fluids and easy to digest foods.
You don't want to eat, say, hotdogs. [img]/images/graemlins/laugh.gif[/img]
Your body's energy needs to be able to work on healing, not digesting heavy foods. This is why chicken noodle soup rocks.
Plenty of rest- good. Take a warm bath, this will increase your circulation without stressing your body like exercise will. Blood heals.
Herbal remedies take time and medicines such as Echinacea actually don't work right off the bat. You have to have it in your system already for awhile.
Beware of remedies such as "Cold EEze". This will only work on your symptoms, not the cold.
Two good remedies you can try that do provide immune support are "Sambucol" (herbal) and "Zicam"(homeopathic).
Vitamin C and Zinc are excellent supplements. If you have never taken Zinc, be sure to take it with food and at the minimum dose as it can cause stomach upset. You can push the vitamin C to tolerance (if you start getting runny poo... back off the C [img]/images/graemlins/laugh.gif[/img])

Oddly enough, I am more motivated to work out when I'm sick.

If you have a chest cold especially, I feel that running (or any other aerobic activity) is the key to getting rid of it quickly. Deep breathing will loosen the phlegm up and help spit it out. Don't over do it, becuase you could wear yourself out even more. Drink TONS of water, and try to get a good night's sleep every night.

I also think that taking at least a multivitamin every day is a good practice to maintain. When you're sick, supplement that with a little extra Vitamin C (500mg). I do it and it seems to help.

I usually drink plenty of water, double up on vitimans, get as much rest as I can, and eat more fruit. I get one about every 18-24 months which is pretty amasing to me because my kids seem to get sick a lot [img]/images/graemlins/smile.gif[/img]

One word..... REST! And lots of it. It's the only thing that helps me get over a cold, strep, whatever. Follow everyone else's advice here and tack on lotsa sleep.

Yep...very good advice here.
1. Lots of fluid (gatorade is best when sick.)
2. Rest...take it easy, lay around as much as possible.
3. eat soft foods...crackers, jello, soups, baby food and etc.
4. Yes absolutely, vitamin C is the ticket and actually should be taken daily whether sick or not. I do, and it has saved me if you will from lots of cold others have got. I strongly believe in vitamin c.
5. Natural remedies are better then most store counter remedies. Even so,if you have to to do the pharmacy counter route, "Claritin" sinus head cold is really good.
When I go the Claritin route I have to be really sick and it does help, usually allows to do the normal daily things.
Sometimes when your sick chores/errands/job still has to be done. Claritin allows me to feel better enough to get it done. I'm sure there is/are a nutural remedy that equals claritin, but I don't have knowledge of it. Make a phone call to a local natural herb shop and they will hook you up.

I have played "off" shows that people told me were our best ever. There's been plenty of health advice offered already, so I'll just add my thoughts on your upcoming gig.

- Use "old favorites" for the show, whether its your most comfortable shoes or the guitar that has the easiest-playing neck. A show that's being recorded is NOT the time to introduce something new to the equation. For example, my last show was going to be playing in front of a larger-than-usual crowd with a professional production company running the lights. I decided to wear combat boots onstage. Bad move. I was off-balance, wasn't nailing my pedals on the first stomp, and was further thrown off by the excessive strobe use of the light tech. My playing was decent, but I could NOT get into a comfortable groove, so my stage presence was a joke.

- If you are still sick when the day of the show arrives, rest as much as you can right up to the moment you go on. If the venue is providing bottled water, stay hydrated and keep a bottle handy for drinking between songs. I've played shows while very sick, and a little water spared me a lot of misery.

- Move around and "rock out" as much as you can, but don't overdo it just because it's being recorded. Just go with the flow!
