To celebrate the release of the new Shining Force title, I am wondering what your favorite rpg's are and why. Besides shining force, there is final fantasy XII, which is set in the same era as tactics. There is Kingdom Heart 2, and there are many other sweet rpgs on the way. I spent most of my 22 years of life playing rpgs. Here are some of my favorites and why
NES games
Dragon Warrior- What can I say? Classic... As long as you say no to that bastard the Dragon Lord.
Final Fantasy I- harder than hell if you play it without cheating.. Good game though.
Final Fantasy III- released in JP only. I downloaded an emulator version of it. Square really started taking some pretty cool steps with this one. I played all the way to the end and the rom file mysteriously vanished from my pc.
SNES
Final Fantasy IV (US II) This is the first rpg that really got me hooked on the FF series. Another classic.
Final Fantasy Mystic Quest. Now this game kind of sucked, but it is an FF game. I had to play it. It turned out to be ok.
Final Fantasy VI (US III) Un freaking believable. Came out right around my birthday in 96 or 97. This game totally kicked my ass. I spent many, MANY hours playing it. Between the characters and the story, this game ruled.
Ogre Battle- quite possibly my favorite RPG ever. I never managed to get all the way through it. I did not have the patience to build up all the stats, find all the secrets, and recruit all the characters. Maybe when I have 300 hours to kill I will start it up again.
Chrono Trigger- Good game. Not much else to say about it.
The 7th Saga- Great SNES rpg. It was a little difficult at first, but when the game genie kicked in it was pretty cool. I got stuck right at the end of the game at a place I can not get out of.
Legend of Zelda:LTTP- Great game. Played it a million times.
Lufia II- I have spent more time playing this than any other game because of that DAMN ANCIENT CAVE. Some of the puzzles were pretty difficult. Overall I loved this game
Lufia I- I have to get my hands on it sometime soon. I believe I was too young to appreciate this game when I first played it all the way through.
Earthbound- The most innovative snes game beside Donkey Kong. I think this is number 4 on my all time greats list. It is indescribably cool!
Genesis
Shining Force I- Here we go. This is when we start getting into some great games. I love turn based RPG's. With all the chapters, character, and battles, it was like on big friggin chess match. I played SFII before I played this, so I could have done without the graphics. Overall, great game.
Shining Force II- Tied with Ogre Battle for my fav all time. It had the best graphics, sound, story, and characters while still maintaining the turn-based format. Plus there was a way to control the bad guys if you did not want to fight a certain battle...
Phantasy Star IV- I have played this game many times as well. Pretty unique. Great Graphics. Easily the best of the Phantasy Star series. I enjoyed it very much.
PSone
Suikoden I- 108 characters can't be wrong. This game was really good. I failed to recruit all the dwarfs, so gremio died at the end...
Vandal Hearts- Another killer turn based rpg with an amazing story. I have played through this many times, each time better than the last. Some of the battles were pretty tricky if you wanted to turn Ash into a Vandalier. I loved it!
Legend Of Dragoon- Not terribly unique, but it had a good story and the gameplay was good. The graphics were a little too pixelated for me.
Final Fantasy VII- The reason I bought playstation. End of story. Widely regarded as the greatest rpg ever. I have been waiting anxiously for Advent Children to come out.
Final Fantasy VIII- One of my all time top favorites. The story was the best out of any game I have played.. EVER. I can not say how much I enjoyed this game.
Final Fantasy IX- Another great FF game. I played through to disc 3, then our copy stopped working...
Final Fantasy Tactics- This game was a real piece of work. FINALLY.. a turn based final fantasy rpg. I do not think I could ask for more. Plus it had a great story, great characters, and the gameplay was awesome. Some of the battles were so friggin hard no matter how high you leveled up, like the Gafgarion battle. Any battle you have to fight for more than 4 hours is tough.
PS2
Chrono Cross- I can not remember if this game was released for PS1 or 2, but I played it on PS2. Great sequel. The soundtrack was awesome. The story between those two games makes me more confused than a bisexual at an orgy. It is deep.
Final Fantasy X- Another amazing FF game. It had a lot of great features that I had not previously seen in FF games. Any guy who has played that game can not honestly say they didn't think the female characters were cute.. It was also the first FF game where you could easily do more than 9999 damage in a single hit.. well besides using the Eden gf in FF8. I liked being able to hit for 99,999 damage. Creating the best weapons and armor for each character was difficult, which made it enjoyable. The end boss was a complete pushover, which disapointed me. I bought the sequel, Final Fantasy X-2, however I could not bring myself to play all the way through it and I read the story on the internet.
Kingdom Hearts- Another great game. It had a pretty solid soundtrack. I really liked how it brought it characters from places like disney movies and final fantasy games. It made KH interesting. The sequel should be amazing.
Suikoden III- I am playing this now for the 2nd time. It could be a while since there are 108 characters and I am trying to find out who is the best. There are some pretty sweet turn based battles.
What I am looking forward to:
Shining Force NEO- I know they switched from turn based to real time, but I have to try this one out. After all, it is a SF title.
Final Fantasy XII- The sort of sequel to FF Tactics. Back to the old realtime run into battles format that the FF games are good for. However the story is set in Ivalice (from Tactics), after tacics ended. I am really excited to pick up where tactics left off.
I know I am forgetting some games, but I had to say something because I am really excited about the new SF title. I do not want to sound too much like a nerd, but I was good at video games... What can I say?
