• Attention rpg players...

To celebrate the release of the new Shining Force title, I am wondering what your favorite rpg's are and why. Besides shining force, there is final fantasy XII, which is set in the same era as tactics. There is Kingdom Heart 2, and there are many other sweet rpgs on the way. I spent most of my 22 years of life playing rpgs. Here are some of my favorites and why

NES games
Dragon Warrior- What can I say? Classic... As long as you say no to that bastard the Dragon Lord.

Final Fantasy I- harder than hell if you play it without cheating.. Good game though.

Final Fantasy III- released in JP only. I downloaded an emulator version of it. Square really started taking some pretty cool steps with this one. I played all the way to the end and the rom file mysteriously vanished from my pc.

SNES
Final Fantasy IV (US II) This is the first rpg that really got me hooked on the FF series. Another classic.
Final Fantasy Mystic Quest. Now this game kind of sucked, but it is an FF game. I had to play it. It turned out to be ok.

Final Fantasy VI (US III) Un freaking believable. Came out right around my birthday in 96 or 97. This game totally kicked my ass. I spent many, MANY hours playing it. Between the characters and the story, this game ruled.

Ogre Battle- quite possibly my favorite RPG ever. I never managed to get all the way through it. I did not have the patience to build up all the stats, find all the secrets, and recruit all the characters. Maybe when I have 300 hours to kill I will start it up again.

Chrono Trigger- Good game. Not much else to say about it.

The 7th Saga- Great SNES rpg. It was a little difficult at first, but when the game genie kicked in it was pretty cool. I got stuck right at the end of the game at a place I can not get out of.

Legend of Zelda:LTTP- Great game. Played it a million times.

Lufia II- I have spent more time playing this than any other game because of that DAMN ANCIENT CAVE. Some of the puzzles were pretty difficult. Overall I loved this game

Lufia I- I have to get my hands on it sometime soon. I believe I was too young to appreciate this game when I first played it all the way through.

Earthbound- The most innovative snes game beside Donkey Kong. I think this is number 4 on my all time greats list. It is indescribably cool!

Genesis

Shining Force I- Here we go. This is when we start getting into some great games. I love turn based RPG's. With all the chapters, character, and battles, it was like on big friggin chess match. I played SFII before I played this, so I could have done without the graphics. Overall, great game.

Shining Force II- Tied with Ogre Battle for my fav all time. It had the best graphics, sound, story, and characters while still maintaining the turn-based format. Plus there was a way to control the bad guys if you did not want to fight a certain battle...

Phantasy Star IV- I have played this game many times as well. Pretty unique. Great Graphics. Easily the best of the Phantasy Star series. I enjoyed it very much.

PSone

Suikoden I- 108 characters can't be wrong. This game was really good. I failed to recruit all the dwarfs, so gremio died at the end...

Vandal Hearts- Another killer turn based rpg with an amazing story. I have played through this many times, each time better than the last. Some of the battles were pretty tricky if you wanted to turn Ash into a Vandalier. I loved it!

Legend Of Dragoon- Not terribly unique, but it had a good story and the gameplay was good. The graphics were a little too pixelated for me.

Final Fantasy VII- The reason I bought playstation. End of story. Widely regarded as the greatest rpg ever. I have been waiting anxiously for Advent Children to come out.

Final Fantasy VIII- One of my all time top favorites. The story was the best out of any game I have played.. EVER. I can not say how much I enjoyed this game.

Final Fantasy IX- Another great FF game. I played through to disc 3, then our copy stopped working...

Final Fantasy Tactics- This game was a real piece of work. FINALLY.. a turn based final fantasy rpg. I do not think I could ask for more. Plus it had a great story, great characters, and the gameplay was awesome. Some of the battles were so friggin hard no matter how high you leveled up, like the Gafgarion battle. Any battle you have to fight for more than 4 hours is tough.

PS2

Chrono Cross- I can not remember if this game was released for PS1 or 2, but I played it on PS2. Great sequel. The soundtrack was awesome. The story between those two games makes me more confused than a bisexual at an orgy. It is deep.

Final Fantasy X- Another amazing FF game. It had a lot of great features that I had not previously seen in FF games. Any guy who has played that game can not honestly say they didn't think the female characters were cute.. It was also the first FF game where you could easily do more than 9999 damage in a single hit.. well besides using the Eden gf in FF8. I liked being able to hit for 99,999 damage. Creating the best weapons and armor for each character was difficult, which made it enjoyable. The end boss was a complete pushover, which disapointed me. I bought the sequel, Final Fantasy X-2, however I could not bring myself to play all the way through it and I read the story on the internet.

Kingdom Hearts- Another great game. It had a pretty solid soundtrack. I really liked how it brought it characters from places like disney movies and final fantasy games. It made KH interesting. The sequel should be amazing.

Suikoden III- I am playing this now for the 2nd time. It could be a while since there are 108 characters and I am trying to find out who is the best. There are some pretty sweet turn based battles.

What I am looking forward to:

Shining Force NEO- I know they switched from turn based to real time, but I have to try this one out. After all, it is a SF title.

Final Fantasy XII- The sort of sequel to FF Tactics. Back to the old realtime run into battles format that the FF games are good for. However the story is set in Ivalice (from Tactics), after tacics ended. I am really excited to pick up where tactics left off.

I know I am forgetting some games, but I had to say something because I am really excited about the new SF title. I do not want to sound too much like a nerd, but I was good at video games... What can I say?

Ya know, I've only played the Zelda games from your list. I don't own a PS2 (waiting for the 3 to even buy the older FF games too), but I played the FF game (I think 12) and I loved it. The only game I play anymore is Diablo II: Lord Of Destruction for the PC, but I don't know if that's really an RPG I used to be a hardcore gamer, but I started playing the guitar and all that went to hell, lol. For the better I guess

My brother has played Chrono Cross and I've had the original soundtrack on CD for a while now. It's incredibly relaxing to listen to it.

I used to listen to the Chrono Cross soundtrack before hockey games... followed by cradle of filth. I am a goalie, and I was very supersticious. It was always some of the Chrono Cross tunes, followed by Cradle's version of Hallowed Be thy Name.

Re: Attention rpg players...

I'm not the gamer much these days any more.
I'm into the gorey, blood fest, limb slashing, spy, killing games. I mostly play PC games and a few console games here and there. Not in any particular order.

1. The Metal Gear games are good especially the first two.
2. Devil may cry 1
3. Call of duty
4. D00M3 I jumped a couple of times during the game, good stuff.
5. Blood Rayne the best vampire game ever. Nothing like jumping on the backs of zombies and whoever else and biting into their necks and sucking up their blood. Gotta love this sort of thing to enjoy it like I do.
6. Splinter Cell. Actually the first one is the better one.
7. Morrowind Elder Scrolls3. Wow, I had no life playing it. It totally consumed me I couldn't quit. To say, I love the game would be an understatement.
8. Quake3
9. Resident Evil 1&2.
10. Silent Hill 1 I jumped a couple of times from this one too.
11. Max Payne 1

Many others I can't think of right now.
Peace, Love and Happieness and all that stuff...

"Anyone who tries to fling crap my way better have a really good crap flinger."

I personally do not care how it was built as long as it is a good playing/sounding instrument.

Yes, there's a bee in the pudding.

Even though I know Chrono trigger is the better game, I still think secret of mana is more fun. I really haven't done much with console rpgs since then. Never had a chance to play the playstation ones my brothers bought.

Secret of Mana. That game was pretty sweet. I did not like how you could not control the other two characters... they were stupid and they always ended up dying even if I put them in defensive mode.

I played Secret Of Mana together with my brother. It really livens things up when you get more human players into it. The battles go by twice as fast and are a LOT more fun.

All time favs:
Dragon Warrior (NES) - My first RPG.
FF VII (PS) - Best characters/story.
Suikoden I/II (PS) - Lots of fun, pretty good story.
FF X (PS2) - So much better than I thought it would be.

Games I started that I need to finish:
Xenogears (PS) - Great dark story for an RPG
FF Tactics (PS) - Too damn time consuming to finish.

Dissapoinments:
Legend of Dragoon, Breath of Fire III (PS) - paint by numbers RPGing.

While on the topic, did anyone here play Eye of the Beholder 2 for PC. Awesome game!

Re: Attention rpg players...

FF1- Awesome, and hard, original NES
FF2- (Jap 4) My favorite of the "pre cd" FFs.
FF2- (The Japanese 2, not US 2)- It was fun, but it wasn't too hot for me.
FF3- (Jap 6) Very good, but I liked 2 more.
FF5- Very difficult IIRC.

FF7-Un-real! I actually just watched Advent Children just recently...weird...I thought pretty much everyone died at the end of 7, but I took my own interpretation of it. I'm considering starting another game on it.If someone said, you only get one FF, what would it be, for me, it would be this one. Story alone!

FF8-what a crock-I think this game sucked (hit R1 use your gun blade, eh screw that).
FF9-By the time I played it, I lost interest in it.
FF10-Holy crap!
FF10-2...wtf? The "awesome sphere"? You take your Charlies angles shit, and give me a real RPG.

FF11- Totally does not thrill me, I don't like the idea of online play.
FF tactics- I have an original unopened copy. I dislike what I've seen.
FF tactics advance- I played it, at work only. It sucked.
FF mystic quest- I remember the comic book ads "brain transplant 39.99" I played it, and thought it was stupid, but I beat it.
Secret of Evermore/Mana, I played the one that came out first, I didn't like it, I bought the second one, and played it for a while, and it was okay, but I didn't get very far. I remember leafy green shit.

The original gameboy FF's weren't really that good, but they were fun.

Chrono-Trigger- One of the best RPG's of all time IMHO.
Chrono-Cross...Hardly a worthy sequel.

Ogre Battle (I've got it for the PSone) I just sold my Snes copy not too long ago. (about 1 week). This game is so fun.

Tactics ogre (Psone) I dislike tactics style games.
Ogre Battle 64 (I got 5 minutes in, and decided the SNES/PSone was better).

Earthbound...a lot of fun. (SNES)
7th Saga...HARD, I remember if you had less life than the dwarf, he would start attacking you (even when he was in your party) the trick was, always having him weaker than you, and ill equiped, kept his ass in line.

Drakken or whatever, sucked. (SNES)

Dragon Warrior, I too said yes to him...that muh fugger!
All of the other dragon warriors, great games, but they got swallowed up, by the people playing other RPGS, makes me sad, because they were really fun. If they weren't so expensive for a cratridge based game, I'd buy them again.

Breath of Fire 1 and 2 (SNES) really good games, really fun, neat stories.

All PS unless otherwise noted

Saga Frontier 1 and 2, eh, kind of fun, but kind of crap.
Brave Fencer Musashi- entertaining.
Xenogears-I've got an unopened original copy, but I think the game sucks, that and Xenosaga 1+2 (PS2). They suck, they robots are stupid, blah blah.
Threads of Fate-Entertaining, but that's about it.
Parasite Eve-VERY fun, VERY HIGH replay value..the bitch runs slow though...
Parasite Eve 2-Fun, but they tried to go all resident evil with it.
Star Ocean The Second Story (PS) Really fun, and good game. The new Star Ocean (Till the end of time, PS2) SUCKED HARD.
Suikoden 1-a very fun game
Suikoden 2-I can't find mine.
Suikoden 3-pretty fun.

I know I've played a lot more than this, some just elude me. I've played all of the Zelda's up to the N64, and then I decided I didn't like Zelda. I remember my one bragging right, was getting all of the way to the end of 1, without the sword, using the rod.

I think Lufia the rest of them (I think 2 was for the SNES, and then there was one or 2 of the PSone) I didn't like them, I used to make fun of my friend for playing them, because when he was playing the PS versions, I was playing Star Ocean.

Vagrant story (PS) lame.

I played all of the Phantasy Stars up to PSO. Here's the thing, they were great games, but ask people, sega, or nintendo, and you know the answer.
Shining Force, they were all great. I believe there was at least one for the Saturn, because I bought a saturn because of it, then when I sold the saturn, the game sold for more than the system!

I just sold my super nintendo and all of the games on eBay a week or 2 ago.

I like some computer games, Baldur's Gate, BG TotSC, BG2 SoA, BG2ToB, IWD, IWD HoW, IWD2, Planescape Torment. (all PC) There is also this tactical shooter (think FF tactics, only with mercs and guns) Jagged alliance 2, Unfinished business.

The Tenchus for PS2 were good. Max Paynes were both good. I've got too many damn games, if I type everything, I'll get carpal tunnel.

I remember Resident Evil one, and how entertaining and scary it was!

Man, thanks for this thread, brought back a lot of fun memories!
