I have been through that myself, my friend, and it is not easy. I feel for you.
Our current dog is facing his final months. We just got back from the vet with some medication to see if that helps his arthritis, and some antibiotics for a few other issues he is having. Our next path of action will largely be determined by how well the meds work (or don't work). If the meds don;t do anything, we will have to decide when the best time to put him down is.
Definitely sucks.

Good Lord! The rod up that man's butt must have a rod up its butt!
He's in his grave now, and I was this >< short of punching the fucking owner of the yard in her ugly face. Grabbed the corpse by the neck in the most unempathic manner I've ever seen. Right in front of us. Assholes.
Other than that, it's a nice & quiet cemetary, a good place for him to rest... sure hope he's in a better place now...
I don't know yet if we'll get another dog. It would be just as hard when his/her time came, but you never know I guess. He certainly made us better people and was a great friend. Something's really missing in the house, now. :/
"My Scottish Collie is 13 right now and that's ancient for those size of dogs, I hope he stays with us for a long while, still...."
i know exactly how you're feeling. i've 3 dogs, all terriers. one is 11, the other two are 5 and 3. luckly our oldest is still running strong as ever. she's too fat, though, and i fear that's what will eventually lead to hear death.
Sorry to hear that bro...It's very tough. I had to do the same thing earlier this month with my 11 yr old Boxer (see my avatar).
Hang in there and remember all the good times you had together. Wait a while before you try to make a decision on whether or not to get another one.
I bet he had a great life. Dogs are so lucky when they have good owners! Sorry for your loss but I bet he was one lucky dog. I keep my last dogs tags on my car key chain.
Sorry to hear. Back in May my family had to put our 13-year-old dog to sleep. She had arhtritis and maybe cancer, started having seizures and couldn't get around too well, so she was better off.
I feel my soul go cold... only the dead are smiling.
Yup, we got ours when I was about 8 years old, I basically grew up with that guy. But he definitely had a great life as some of you already suggested, which makes me a little more comfortable. Still, it will feel weird waking up tomorrow and not having him around.
I'll look for a pic of him, don't think we have any digital ones though. He's probably asleep on most of the pictures, anyway.
Yeah, my first one I got when I was 3, she died when I was 16. My parents were away for the weekend, my little brother was at my aunt's, and I was home by myself and working my little part-time job. The dog layed on the kitchen floor the whole weekend and I couldn't get her to do anything. When my parents came home late Sunday afternoon, the dog looked up at them, wagged her tail, then closed her eyes and that was it for her. It was like she knew she was going and wanted to wait to see them before she went. Didn't get the next one until three years later, she's the one just put to sleep this past May. They definitely brought a lot of joy to the family, though. Still a little weird when I go to my parents' house now and the dog isn't greeting me at the door.

i thought i was going to lose my dog (Min Pin) a few months ago, but after blood transfusions and hospital stays he pulled through. $3000 dollars later I should say. Now the little bastard tore his ACL that is going to cost about another $1000 to repair this saturday. Needless to say, this has been a bleak year for new guitars. His name is Gibson, which if I bought a real LPC, I would be ahead of the game. He is in my lap as I'm typing this giving me the look. Ugh, the guilt. Sorry about your dog. (need a Min Pin that limps?)
