  • Title would upset pathetic harmony in city

    October 25, 2005

    BY RICK TELANDER SUN-TIMES COLUMNIST

If the White Sox win this World Series, trouble looms.

Right now we live in a city united by failure.

There are always sporadic rumblings of unrest. As there have been since the Failure of 1969 and even back to the Gambling of 1919.

But when Cubs fans and Sox fans meet, neither group has the trump card that yells, "Ha, ha, ha!''

After a combined 185 years of never winning the World Series, there can be no overriding muscle to any argument for superiority on either side.

As has been mentioned before in this column, the Sox generally have played a complacent, even remote, second fiddle to the Cubs because they're not quite as devoted to ineptitude as the North Siders.

There's room in the heart, science has proved, for only one prime Lovable Loser.

Still, the Cubs and Sox have been like different compartments on the same sinking ship.

Now a World Series championship threatens to destroy the delicate balance that has allowed the teams to exist in relative harmony for generations.

In short, when the Sox win, the Cubs will stand alone.

And the conflict will begin in earnest.

It won't be that the Sox will have done something unbelievable as much as it will be the Cubs who will have continued to do something unbelievable.

The second-closest team to the Cubs in World Series failure is the White Sox. When the Boston Red Sox won in 2004, they eliminated themselves and their 1918 curse from the pity parade.

If the White Sox (crown-less since 1917) win, no other team can even approach the Cubs' failure since 1908.

You see, winning the World Series, while a marvelous accomplishment, does not make one singular.

The Angels, Diamondbacks and Marlins have won the Series in recent years.

Heck, the Marlins (anybody think they're a special organization?) have won it twice since 1997.

The Toronto Blue Jays have won it twice -- a team from the North Pole, for goodness' sakes!

The Oakland Athletics have won it four times since 1972.

Even the Twins, a team Major League Baseball tried to fold, have won a pair of World Series crowns.

    Incredible ineptitude

What is singular is not winning the World Series.

    For nearly a century.

That, folks, is what will cause the furor.

In a matter of days, Sox fans might have -- for the first time ever -- the ammo to hurt their enemies across the line.

To help make my point about the impending conflict, I have drawn a map called "A Chicagoan's View of the United States.''

Although it isn't labeled, the dividing line between peoples, as all Chicagoans know, is Madison Street, indicated by a dotted line in the center of the map.

Not only is Madison Street the North-South zero-hundred boundary that equally splits the kingdom of Chicago like a chain saw from Lake Michigan to Iowa, it is also a latitudinal chasm that splits team allegiances like a cracked coconut.

In a sense, Madison Street is an asphalt mullet: business up front, party in the back.

And Sox fans -- whose ballpark is 71 blocks south of Wrigley Field -- will be partying like crazy when their team wins.

When the Cubs-Sox interleague games are played next season, beware the signage that will eviscerate Cubs fans at U.S. Cellular Field.

    Forget "Cork!''

    Try "Neutered!''

Because they will stand naked against the arrows on their pedestal of pity, Cubs fans will retreat to viciousness to attempt to harm their long-docile foes.

    Territorial battle

They will try to harm Sox fans by saying cruel things about their gender, their income, their backgrounds, their hairstyles -- even though a recent study in this paper showed fans of both teams are virtually identical in almost any category you choose.

Still, the world will be divided into two fervid camps -- Cubs people and Sox people.

The Sox-controlled territory -- with cells in various remote outposts such as Miami, Mexico and Las Vegas -- will be dwarfed by the Cubs-controlled lands.

That won't make the conflict easier.

Cooperation and compassion between camps will vanish.

The "good old days'' will be a distant memory.

The Cubs-owning Tribune Co. will be forced to do one of three things: build a World Series championship team itself, embrace loserdom and actively market it or sell the Cubs.

    Until then, tension will reign.

And Madison Street will be the Mason-Dixon line of baseball: whimper in front, gloat in the back.

Your right Tekky, but it is a necessary step in ridding Chicago of this title. If ChiSox win, that leaves one left in town, to wipe out the curse? It may even motivate the Cubs to seek better players and to 'really' play harder. But, until then, it was necessary. Even if the Cubs met the ChiSox in WS play, someone has to win, someone has to lose. ChiSox may walk around with their noses up for a while and fans probably obnoxious to Cubs fans, but ultimately, its heading in the right direction. (Hell, I've had to put up with Mets fans). Not being from the area, you don't really get the full impact of the Cubs/Sox rivalry. Let's put it this way, when the Mayor wore a Cubs hat (which he's a die-hard Sox fan) to support the Cubs vs the Marlins a year or so back, he dropped a few points in the polls.

We're talking about Richard M. Daley! Da MARE! Hizzoner!! Richard Daley and the office of Mayor in Chicago are synonymous. (His Dad, Richard J. Daley, reigned from 1955 until his death in 1976)

yep. todd speaks the truth. i was raised not only a white sox fan, but also a cub hater. it's one or the other. there's a newspaper that mainly services the south side and the south suburbs called the daily southtown, and i remember one of their billboards reading "sox win, cubs lose. another great day in baseball." loved that. It's interesting though, I was born in NW Indiana and there were both Sox and Cubs fans, mind you, not one in the same person.

Another Daily Southtown billboard I liked was, "People up North just don't get it."

Chicago has always been about a North/South rivalry. I remember shortly after I moved to Chicago (the Nort side - that's how it's pronounced) an ex of mine who was a die-hard Sox fan just said to me, I always knew you were a Nort-sider... and I haven't spoken to her since.

A Cubs fan grumps through White Sox wins

                    David Harrington
                    Published October 25, 2005

Oak Lawn -- Standing in an overcrowded bar on South Western Avenue, I could not help but wonder why I had agreed to watch Game 1 of the World Series with my Sox fan friends.

I am a lifelong, South Side Cubs fan, and the thought of the White Sox winning the World Series makes me cringe.

The White Sox cannot win the World Series before the Cubs, because if they do, I'll never hear the end of it.

Myself being a Cubs fan, I hate the White Sox! The last thing I want to do is see them win.

That does not mean I don't respect the Sox, because I do. I just feel that any real Cubs fan would never want to see the Sox win, and vice versa.

The whole "Chicago Fan" thing just never sat right with me. If you're a Cubs fan, you're a Cubs fan, and if you choose to root for the Sox, then you are not a true Cubs fan.

The 2005 Chicago White Sox are an excellent team. There is no doubt about it. And I don't mind getting guff from real Sox fans who have been following the team since Day 1.

It is the fair-weather fans who really annoy me, and even worse are the so-called Cubs fans who just want a Chicago team to win.

I know many people will agree with me, especially White Sox fans. A lyric from "The Ballad of the South Side Irish" goes like this: "When it comes to baseball, we've got two favorite clubs: the Go-Go White Sox and whoever plays the Cubs."

So even though I will never cheer for the White Sox, I will at least say "congratulations" to the team and the real Sox fans out there.

And, as I've said many times before, the Cubs always have next year.

a cub fan in oak lawn! wow. my dad's side of the family is from evergreen park, not far from there. definitely sox town.

a friend of mine was at game 1 and 2 of the ALCS, and he went to a bar after each game near the stadium. he said they sat near the windows and saw everyone driving around with sox flags, etc, hanging from their cars. he tells me "now, if we were on a north side bar, what kinda music do you think we'd be hearing? probably dave matthews and other irritating WXRT stuff like that. now sully, what do you think was crankin on the stereo at the bar?

                        ...megadeth."

I do see though. Remember, we had the 2000 Subway series here, and there was a lot hatred. It's probably not quite the magnitude as a Cubs-White Sox, 'choose a side' situation. Both the Mets and Yanks have won in recent years.

Don with the Yanks and Mets it isn't the same thing. The Mets aren't as old as the Yanks and say it was the Dodgers or Giants it would have a deeper history. The Yanks have dominated the town so much that it isn't the same. Plus the Met's have fans? I thought only Manhattan Snobs liked the Mets.
