Em just so you know Ritalin and other ADD drugs are Methamphatamines.... or legal speed or crank whatever they call it where you live. Look at the active ingrediantes on the label most are amphetamines.
I highly advise against giving your kid these drugs unless you would give your kid speed which I know you would not.
When I was a teenager I went through my own hard times anyways we would steal my friend's sisters Ritalin to get high and let me tell you it is not very different from real speed. So unless your kid has very severe mental disorders it is just not the way to go with drugs doctors get kicks for perscribing so many kids these drugs I know alot of people that would see doctors just to get these drugs to abuse.
High Emmy , what is a good "weed" suppliment.

Keep all options on the table Em. We didn't want our son on medication and that was our last option. He takes a low dosage of Adderall 5 days a week. We don't give it to him on the weekend or during the summer when he doesn't really need to focus and concentrate on school work. When he is having difficulties we will give it to him.
I'm against pharmaceutical companies and the medical profession always think a pill is needed for every stupid little thing (probably because the doctors have stock in the pharmaceutical company). I hate all the commercials on TV from pharmaceutical companies too. They brainwash people causing the "hey, I got that" syndrome. With all the side effects that they ramble on at the end of the add I don't know why people would want to take it in the first place.
I can understand about the TAKS test, teachers do a good job stressing the kids out about them. The tests are not as bad as they make the kids think they are. Every year my kids are jacked up and worried about them, after they take them they always say that it was easy.
I can also understand about being bored, my oldest son is really smart and an A-B student. He hates school, he gets things really fast and once teachers start explaining how to do something, once he gets it he's bored doesnt pay attention while the teachers keep going on and on
Em, I didn't have time to check the whole thread, so I apologize if this was already brought up. We had a friend whose kid had a sudden, out of the blue onset of what was diagnosed as ADD. Luckily, their doctor had just been reading some journals & there had been a study linking sleep apnea to ADD symptoms in kids. He told them to check in on her at night to see if she was snoring & tossing & turning as she slept. Sure enough, she was. They treated her for sleep apnea (tonsilectomy, in her case) & the ADD symptoms disappeared.

Sorry AK but there is quite a difference between the Ritalin I was taking in school and speed. Its perscribed for a reason. For a person who doesn't have ADD it can be very bad yes, thats why Em should know for sure. But saying someone who gives their child, who actually HAS ADD, Ritalin is no different then giving them speed is both irresponsible, incorrect and insulting. Doctors don't prescribe this stuff because they think its funny, they do it because it helps kids that truly have ADD. The real problem is doctor's misdiagnosing or not even testing kids who's parent's come in and say "I think my kid has ADD". It helped me immensely when I needed it most, I no longer need it anymore so I don't take it. But if it became a problem I would go back to Ritalin in a hearbeat.
I saw some documentary one time about Ritalin and kid's parents stealing it to get high off of it.
I didn't know about the methamphetamine/speed dealio but I wouldn't be surprised. I know that these things are supposed to be controlled.
Anything can be addictive and harmful, I was addicted to benadryl and pseudophedrine at one time. I got myself off of it, thankfully. With no help from an MD I might add.
I don't trust our medical/pharmaceutical system out here but I do know that there are some very kickass doctors and medications that are important that have saved lives and returned people's sanity. It's a fine line to walk, you simply have to be smart and educate yourself.
Some herbs are highly poisonous (example: foxglove also known as digitalis) but this digitalis is vital for some heart patients. They need it, but someone without a heart condition that takes it will die, and even those folks who are on it if they take too much will die.
Shawn,
Thank you so much for sharing your story about your son. It is very similar to my girlfriend's story with her daughter. They do the same thing, she is on Adderall only during the schoolweek and not on weekends or summertime. I know her daughter and have seen the remarkable difference from how she was before. Khosi has some similar behaviors, which is why I am even curious about this for her as well.
The only difference is that Courtney has always been like this and Khosi pretty much overnight turned spacey and frustrated and it happened right after she started school.
Thank you for the peace of mind on the TAKS testing too, I will have Khosi read that. I think it will make her feel better. It really pisses me off how much they drill this test into the kids and frighten them. This is one of the things I will be talking with Khosi's teacher about next week. She is a very sweet and smart lady, I know that she will be receptive.
dg,
Good point on the sleep apnea, that did not occur to me.
This could be the case, she sleeps well but because we all can't breathe out here (the environment is very polluted from the fire training station across the road, and just from the dusty desert and high winds) none of us sleep that well because we simply cannot breathe.
Khosi is a snorer.
We have taken some measures in our home to assist with that, but there is simply nothing we can do other than move. We really need to get the hell out of here and I've been contemplating moving myself and the kids as early as this spring when they're out of school, then Keith can join us when he is finished up here.
Chris,
You make some excellent points about the laziness of the medical profession and parents today. It is one of my biggest pet peeves when I get a frustrated client coming to me because they don't know what to do or where to start.
Misdiagnosing is so very very common, I see it all the time.
Some doctors fail to recognize the cause of the problem and never ask about nutrition or lifestyle behaviors, I honestly have yet to see an MD do that. I'm sure some do, I just haven't come across one yet.
I'm making some adjustments in Khosi's diet and in her activities. She is an incredibly curious child and really enjoys taking particular subjects and learning all she can about them. She is also incredibly gifted artistically.
I'm taking her out to get some big canvases and setting up the easel for her and handing her some oils. She will LOVE that, she hasn't experimented with that medium yet and I think she might take to that, either that or sculpting. I will let her choose.
The homeopathics I will start for her next week, another holistic healer is taking care of that for me. She just had a check-up with her doctor and had a clean bill of health, so I will watch her and see how she does in the next month with some of these changes. Also working out a plan with her teacher and looking into counseling. I tried to get another appt. with her doctor but she's booked until December (we have only one pediatrician for the whole base).
So we'll see how this goes.
Yes Em, my kid has been diagnosed with ADD and everything else from A-Z. I'll let you know when we figure out how to handle it.
Don't forget the corn. It's nutritious, delicious, and ribbed for her pleasure.

Show me were the difference is. Feel free to refrence pharmacutical websites. It has the same active ingrediantes as meth and the same side effects. Notice they are both habit forming and I think it says something about may cause dementia and to discontinue use if symptoms occur. I think thats the funniest part I wish tweakers would discontinue use when symptoms of dementia occur.
It would be safer to put your kids on viacodin.
One last thing, West Point, VMI, Air Force Academy will not take any new students that were on ADD medication or certain anti depresants when they were kids.
That tells you something right there the goverment dont want them if they were hooked. You dont want a junkie pilot flying an F18 right?
I know I'm the a new guy here but I do have some thoughts. My daughter, whom lived with her mother, has been diagnosed with everything from mild schizophrenia to OCD to Autism. These doctors had her on so much medication that the poor kid was a zombie. This was highly protested by me but because she had custody I had very little say in the matter.
She was a straight F student and incredibly destructive in class.
Now the cure for most of her problems was easy. She was removed from her mother and came to live with me. I tossed all her med's in the trash, straightened her diet out.
She has just brought her first paper home from school.... How about that she got an A.
As for you daughter, it's pretty simple, she misses her dad. There is a big hole in her heart and soul. She doesn't have her dad to show the good grades or any achievements. There is special bond between a father and daughter. When daddy comes home she will straighten up.
I'm getting on my knees begging you not to medicate

I'm glad to hear the good news about your daughter! Congrats!
However, Khosi's Dad IS home. He has a flyer's schedule (USAF). He's home for a few weeks at a time (sometimes a month or two) and then gone for a couple weeks.
He's been home since school started (2 1/2 months) and is getting ready to leave next week for two weeks. Two months is the longest he's ever home for a stretch at a time.
She does miss her Dad, yeah... but its not quite like that.
He is home for birthdays and holidays and is usually able to attend all of her events. Two years ago it was a different story...
It's just a hectic schedule as we never know when he's comin' or goin'. She understands now that everytime he leaves he's not going off to war, but he does travel around the world so it's a hard concept for a little one to understand.
Not to worry... medicating is only an option and it is the very last one.
