You didn't see any smiles on my face in the pictures.. did you? Nope.
I didn't use the Soldano although I should have. I dialed it in this morning with some tube swaps and cabinet changes and it is really smoking now. I used the Carvin and the EQ with my Boss GT-6. People said our guitar sound was excellent. I have to admit... it was.
Yea... I did smoke Jim on the shredfest. This time!! ...lol...
He is a hell of a player. I am just in my element when it comes to tearing into a live guitar solo and I caught him completely off guard although a guitarist should always be ready to rip into a guitar solo. I was born ready. I did find out one thing last night at the gig. I am starting to get a following of people who are craving gutiar solo's and shredding. Another nice thing was that nobody told me that I was good. Instead they said the band sounded excellent.
That was very cool. We had a few "moments" that could have gone negative with me and would have in the past BUT instead turned into positives. It was a pretty fun night. I almost worked out a threesome but I got home too late and they were too drunk. Next time. Note to self... I need to work on my mojo more.

Re: Welcome to my Hell!!!!!!!

I try to take compliments and criticism with a grain of salt. The bottom line is whether the crowd had a good time, that I played my best and sounded 'good' and that people will come back.

To me the greatest compliments come from guys who are or were higher on the circuit doing national tours and such, those mean a good deal to me because I respect them.

If the band I'm in is giving flack for something like my guitar tone and a seasoned, respected player comes up and pays me a compliment on my playing or my sound/'tone'... that is more like ammo for sweet revenge.

Ahh, the drummer usually got the threesome..altho he had one 'staged' one night to make the reast of the guys envious as we were all in the next room having to listen to the moans. (got him back tho)
I often spent time after the gig practicing more as I would be still kinda fired up for a couple more hours or wanted to work out some ideas.

Re: Welcome to my Hell!!!!!!!

I always wanted compliments on my playing from other players, and basically disregarded compliments from non-players, because "what did they know about it?"

Later I realized that just because they don't play doesn't mean they don't know what they like, and if they like what I'm playing, then their compliments are genuiune, not just "golly gee wow!".

Of course I also later found out that players complimented me just because they wanted to steal my licks

That's really the bottom line right there.

In '92 I was bitter and burned out, so I cut my hair, got a real job, and started racing motorcycles.

Eight years later I started playing again, and now I enjoy it again. Motorcycles and racing will always be very important to me, and my hobby of playing is back to being a hobby again.

John -

If someone took the time to compliment you, ENJOY IT. My band gigs a bit, and we don't make that much money - $50 to $100 each after clearing bills like bar tabs and gas. However, we have FUN playing and it's a lot more enjoyable to do it at a gig instead of playing in a garage.

I had a few 'near misses' with being able to take my music to a level where I could make a living at it - it's frustrating. But for every guy who got the record contract or the high profile gig there are thousands of just as deserving folk who didn't get it. Shit happens, you can wallow in it and make yourself miserable or enjoy what you have.

Everyone posting here can play a guitar. I know from teaching for years at a music store that there are people who can't even play a few chords properly - they lack the discipline, the drive, the whatever - and they are envious as hell at all of us.

If you enjoy playing, then enjoy it! Don't dwell on the past. If you don't enjoy playing, then sell the gear and take up a new hobby.

Pete

Here's one for ya. I get a lot of compliments about my playing from John himself. John and me aren't even in the same league. I'm not trying to blow smoke up his ass (he does that well enough on his own! ). Those compliments mean a lot to me because of where he's at as far as guitar playing goes. I also appreciate compliments from non players, because they are the ones that just listen. If I can get those non players to compliment me, then I feel great. I was never close to having a record deal, but I was in a band for a while that believed our time would come. I don't regret not making it. I like my life the way it is. I like the fact that I have my wife and kids plus I get to play out with my band and if thats as good as it gets, I'll take. I like having it both ways.

By the way, John, You are the best guitar player I have ever heard!

Seriously though you are that good. Enjoy it when someone tells you brutha!
