• The writing is on the wall

Our last big layoff was in July. The VP of our division held a meeting afterwards and said that was the end of the layoffs and the company is still very strong. He stated that if he didn't think the company had a great future he wouldn't still be there.

He resigned today saying he found a better position.

Yep, I've already been through that crap.
Yes its definitely "writing on the wall".
You can either ride it and wish for the best. Which in these situations there are no best/better scenarios with waiting it out. Only corporate will benefit. Or you can out start looking else where while the getting is still good, and bail before it goes belly up. If corporate has their way, and they will, it will eventually belly up. Corporate only cares about what it looks like on paper. They don't care about people losing their jobs and causing families to struggle.

I hope you have been making provisions.
In other words, you got more than enough money put back(in the bank)to make it through a temporary set back? Money goes very quick be cautious and manage your money wisely more now than before. Thats means no guitars, vacations and big spending will be put on hold. Wait on the investing, untill you see how this is gonna play out, or, till your sure and comfortable with the choice you will be making financially.

It least you are seeing the signs, others will be in denial up untill they very moment they get released or let go.
Peace, Love and Happieness and all that stuff...

"Anyone who tries to fling crap my way better have a really good crap flinger."

I personally do not care how it was built as long as it is a good playing/sounding instrument.

Yes, there's a bee in the pudding.

I'll be the voice of reason here. His departure doesn't necessarily mean the company's in bad shape. Sounds like he just had dollar signs on the brain. Keep the faith, brutha.

Post the announcement on a few stock trader boards, encouraging them to sell their stock, and then watch the exec's golden parachutes develop holes.

The common worker holds their employer by the balls. When they pull these stunts, squeeze as hard as you can. Reduce the quality standards, scare away business, and generally show them what power really is. You have to make it clear to them that picking up and moving to India or China and throwing you into the ranks of the unemployed while they rake in the bigger bucks is going to cost them dearly in the process.

A company deserves only as much loyalty and respect as they give. They've shown they are there only for the money, not the people. Be there for the money, not the company, and screw them as slow, deep, and hard as they screw you.

Yeah, but what if the company actually is solvent and that supervisor just got a better offer. Before I started a panic, I'd get my facts straight. Actually labor does not hold that many cards anymore generally, even you are sucessful in bringing a company down, there you are looking for a job. Why do you think so many companies relocate to China or India or even closer Mexico, as fucked up as it may seem, its the way it is now.
I would get a resume together and start fishing just to be safe tho.

Re: The writing is on the wall

I'd at least start shaking the tree enough to get a straight answer. Usually they want to keep that info as secret as possible - when I first started the job I have now 5 years ago, they called a meeting and said there were layoffs on the horizon (6 months to a year down the road) and that MIGHT include full-time people.

In less than a week, 7 people that had been there for 3 to 10 years left without warning to find another job. Turned out that business had suddenly picked up the very next week and they were hiring people like crazy, me included.
So yeah, I can see where speaking too soon can cause a problem. I've also seen where idle rumor and cloak and dagger has the same effect. Another place I worked was ALWAYS "shutting down next week". That was the hot rumor when I got there. 4 years later, corporate came in and said "we're closing and moving to New York". I had a chance to go, but the pay wasn't that great, and they had customers and managers I did not care to serve any longer.
In that 4 years, dozens of people came and went in fear of the "overnight lockout" that happened at another facility: on Friday the employees organized into a union. That weekend, the building was cleaned out and a sign hung on the gate that said "Relocated - No Work".

So yeah, as an employee who depends on a steady paycheck and doesn't have a 6-figure income, I'd definitely want someone to give me the straight dope and not blow smoke up my butt just so I didn't bail on them. 300+ people looking for a job at the same time blows. It blows even more when that 300+ joins the others that were there 6 months before them and STILL can't get a job. Meanwhile the bills keep coming even if the paychecks aren't.

Like I said, a company only deserves the same level of respect it gives - customers, employees, investors, whatever. The company has no right to complain about employees bailing when they themselves are planning to bail on the employees.

As for why so many companies relocate to China and Mexico - cheaper labor, no benefits packages, and more of the profit goes into the pockets of a handful of people. There are no pay raises on the production floor - you don't like the pay, go work somewhere else.

Can a poorly educated 12 year old Indonesian girl assemble a guitar better than even a moderately educated 20-something American? Of course not, we see the evidence day in day out. Does the Indonesian girl get medical, dental, optical, vacation, sick pay, Family Leave, Maternity Leave, profit sharing, IRA, or any other benefit?
They get the glory of working another day, and maybe eating a meal.

If this keeps up, we'll be a 3rd World Nation as well.
