the most important area in packing a guitar is the body. you pack the body so it can't move in the case. the problem is this area:



all that room for the guitar to move back and forth is what killed it. JCMI has to stop using these cases, or at least have them form fit.

Maybe they could put foam inserts in for shipping. Protect the guitar in transit, then take them out for the original
look. JCMI can't enjoy the breakage rate, and foam is cheaper than necks.

Totally agree.

Although some additional packing might have helped avoid the damage, the underlying cause here is the guitar moving around in the case when UPS does their Samsonite ape impersonations.

Those cases need a form-fitting insert. Screw-counters be damned. I want my guitars delivered in one piece.

The bottom line is that any rattle or roll in the case needs to dampened. All the cases I have support the guitar to keep it straight. Shipping is a whole other matter. The UPS guys see a long box. I can see it thrown on a conveyor belt hitting the ends or the middle of the box. There is too much room in a case to bust the guitar. I have had personal experince with, of all things, a sewing machine in a case. The case and the machine were messed up beause I did not pack the machine in the case.

Can't they use that liquid form fitting stuff that is like wrapped in plastic wrap paper? I see stuff all the time shipped with that junk, like it is a foam insulate material that must be wet, or injected, and ot hardens form fitting around things. Sorta like the spray foam insulate stuff for holes in walls etc. But, it is contained in plastic wrap paper stuff.

I've seen it used a lot with wood furniture, and seems to stop all movement... when you remove the furniture, you just snap the insulate off and discard.

The case thing confuses me as well. I got a Star case a while back, and it's the same case you get when you buy a new USA Charvel Star, and it's form-fitting. It's almost TOO form-fitting - had a bit of trouble getting the guitar in the case because it was so tight, but it's in there and ain't moving. I've seen original Star cases, and they're just like the case for the Greenies.
So why are the Strat cases not form-fitting if the Star cases are?

JCMI really does need to get with G&G on it, screw-counters be damned [img]/images/graemlins/laugh.gif[/img]

I'll take the modern safety and security over "just like the old days" any day.

As far as not using UPS - anytime one of you guys wants to open a DHL or FedEx office nearby, you go right ahead, but UPS is the only place I got that's local. I can do pickup calls, but I'm on a specific schedule and don't have a spare day to waste waiting/wondering if some guy from Memphis can find my house before I leave for work or have to go to bed so I can get up in time for work.

Besides, it's like McDonald's - the same idiot that's screwing up your order today will be screwing up your Wendy's order next week.
