Oh man that sucks, sorry to see that. Out of the 20 guitars shipped haven't the majority showed up in some kind of state of distress? I know my box was completely open at one end, and crushed in the middle. When the UPS guy went to hand it to me, the case slid out and slid down a few stairs. I personally have always had problem with UPS, never any with FedEx overnight or DHL.

Oh man that fucking blows. I hate those pricks. I also hate seeing something like that. Sorry for your loss Pat. At least with UPS it can be insured for the full amount. FedEx will only insure guitars up to 500 dollars now.

Only if that particular guitar is an antique, and/or irreplaceable. Other than that, you can ship any guitar for its declared value no matter what the price with FedEx as long as you can order another one.

i've always bought my cases seperately, usually because i never budget for them - just the guitar. before i started playing jacksons, i had an import bc rich ironbird (nj2003). their cases aren't to spec. the headstock literally stabbed the end of the case. it was consequently chipped. the cardboard boxes however (even with import jacksons) don't have sections shielding the guitar from trem bars, springs and alum keys - they just cellotape them to the headstock! the best decision i ever made was to order through a local dealer, inspect it before i took it home. at least if it did get damaged later, i could only blame myself. mail order is a big NO for me. too much wasted time, effort and money.

hm. i just shipped a guitar last week with $1800 worth of insurance on it. the dude just charged me for it, didn't ask if it was an antique or anything.

I'm sure they have no problem charging anyone. When the claim payment comes due is a different story. They never mentioned the antique part when I called and asked about it. Personally any of the old Jackson/Charvel's aren't replaceable even though the company can build a look alike.

Did you actually ship from FedEx or did you use a 3rd party shipper? FedEx will only insure to $500. They may let you claim more, but they only allow for $500. If you use a 3rd party shipper (i.e. those small mom pop shippers) they may be hooked up with a 3rd part insurer. I have sent some pretty pricey watches through FedEx and they always refer me to a insurance company. As a matter of fact the 3rd party insurer has all these rules that must be followed. The package has to be a certain size, no where on it can it state the contents(on the box/shipping label), must be wrapped a certain way, cannot have a declared value on it, and they usuall want a photo of the item.

Now you got me thinking. We should get a definate answer from FedEx. I have been told by several long term employees that know there stuff it's $500 max on any item. I've been to the same Kinkos/FedEx that I use and a new person will be there and they wont even blink when you tell the the declared amount.

Ok I called FedEx, here is the story. A new guitar as long as it is not "rare" or an antiques, can be insured for the replacement value. Of course a bill of sale is needed. It seems that for watches the most is $500, hence the need for a 3rd party insurere. So the info stated earlier was correct. Sorry for the confusion.
