So, I showed my former boss the picture of the green charvel. Granted, this is coming from a guy that was employeed with them from 7-8 years ago. He said that the best thing that you can do is overinsure a high doller item.

Here is the deal.

If you insure for over 5000.00, It gets routed away from the normal package carrying apes. It is loaded on and off of trucks by supervisors and it is the last thing that is loaded in the trucks. The cargo is then checked by managers to make sure that it is secure.

How much does it cost to insure an item for $5,000 anyway?

Not a whole lot. Go to www.ups.com and calculate a shipment, putting in the insured value, then again without the insured value and compare the two.

However, be aware that before they pay a claim, you will be asked for the original invoices showing where you paid that much for it. That's what happened with me and the Cracked Mirror Warrior. I had the receipts for the Iommi, the body, and the case, but not the neck and bridge. It cost me $600 to build, and sold it for $400 shipped. Since they included the shipping charge in the refund, that was enough to push it up to $400, and that's what they paid me. Had I insured it for $600, I'd be screwed without those receipts.

I think the point being that you will probably never need to worry about the insurance because it is handled very carefully, and bypasses the normal avnues of mistreatment.

Sounds like a plan to me.

This is sad but true. I just did this with the newest Jackson I bought. I insured it for $4000. I was told anything over $3000 would be handled differently. I actually went to the UPS hub and picked it up. They gave me no hassle and the box didn't have a scatch or dent. Live and learn.

I am so sorry that happened to you. When I saw it, I turned to my boss (who use to be a UPS supervisor). He was like OMG.. that is just horrid. Then started rambling out policy. The point of this thread was to show different avenues that people could take to insure that their precious cargo arrives safe.

Sounds like 3K is now the amount for a safe delivery. One other thing that they do that helps it from getting damaged is that they place the package in a Mylar bag before putting it in with the rest of the stuff.

Good bit of information. Thread should be stickied in the Ebay area.

Man, I'm tellin' ya. Go DHL.

I used to work at a sort hub in college. We would get in trouble for throwing anything. All of our freight was packed in shipping containers and loaded on the trucks. UPS just stuffs the trucks as tight as they can go. If anything got busted or lost, the person who signed off on the truck had a meeting with the hub manager the next night.

Also, if an item is going ground or 2nd day, and there is room on the truck...it's going. It's not uncommon for an item to go DHL ground from East Coast to West Coast in 2 or 3 days.

UPS scares me to death.
