My hat is off to anybody who can keep a band together. Good Luck, dude.

Your current bandmates should understand; nothing's happening there. If they're pissed at first, they'll get over it if they're really your friends. Luckily you can just point out that you're stepping into an established band; it's not like you guys are out gigging too. You're just more serious at this point. It's the right thing to do, and if you didn't you'd regret it, and maybe resent your current buds for "holding you back". That'd be unfair to everybody concerned.

And good luck with the new band!

Ummm, I have an idea, why not do BOTH? Bands aren't like marriages, you can have more than one. It's obvious what band would be the priority, but how bad will it hurt you to attend one other band practice if you're still into it? Most serious musicians I know are in at LEAST 2 if not more bands. I've got a main band, and I can't keep track of all my side projects and my drummer plays for at least 4 other bands. As long as you've got your priorities straight, play with as many people as you like!!!

'most' bands don't like jobbers, like any employer they feel any other gig may provide a conflict of interest.

Re: Band Problems... Need advice

I have given this a lot of thought, and I am really wondering if this is what I am supposed to be doing. I spoke to the guys in my current band about only practicing 1-2 a month, and we decided we are going to make some sacrifices and get together more.

Aside from that, I am really starting to enjoy my freedom. I got out of college a few months ago, am working a full time 9-5 job that I really enjoy as well as officiating for the winter hockey season, having a house built for my fiance and I, getting married in 6 months which seems to require a lot of planning, and just overall really enjoying my freetime. Working during the weekdays, working in the yard/around the house on the weekends, church on sundays... I feel I am really getting into a pattern of things that I am starting to enjoy. I really do not know if I am ready to committ my time, money, and energy to what I would consider a "full time" project.

Re: Band Problems... Need advice

A guy I gigged with in town, "Bugsy" officiated hockey while putting his band together. The schedule seemed to really be pretty flexible to allow him to pursue putting his band and other business ventures to fruitition.
It seemed to pay the bills while he pursued other interests.

If you have a 9-5 and have all this other issues on your plate..you won't have time for a road gig or a full time unless they were local and not pushing to relocate.

I've known a lot of guys, guys from alot of major local acts of old, Jesse Brady, Dare Force,.. they all worked FT and gigged the circuit weekends until the got some attention for a national venture. If you don't sustain or push yourself on the national scene, then you're back to clubs and whatnot and working to suppliment your wallet.

It sounds like you've already made up your mind.
Certainly tho, given this age of being able to collaborate on tracks and share music so freely and quickly, it would not hurt to keep contact with this new interest and do some writing with them to see where it goes.

Re: Band Problems... Need advice

What is the name of the band you've been considering? I probably know them, or at least have heard of them. The Twin Cities music scene is an easy place to find musicians, but a tough place to actually get a full band up and running. If you have the time to play in both bands, you could treat your first band as a side project, since you don't have the full lineup you need to move forward. On the other hand, if you can't find a drummer and bassist, it's an uphill battle to say the least. Joining an established band is the more likely path to recording and gigging, if that's what your desired outcome is.

Feel free to PM me if you want. I'm curious what band this is, since I only know of a couple with vacant guitar positions.

oh yeah, bassists in this town have it easy, plenty of gigs available to a decent bass player.

Ryan, maybe he doesn't want to tell us as he wants the gig for himself

I have my own little projects going and not going.. like ya say, starting up a band of any sort is never easy even when an agency puts it together for the sole purpose of playing road gigs & making them moolah.

Re: Band Problems... Need advice

Actually, I will openly share the info... The singer and guitarist used to play in a band called The Demise. All four musicians (bass, guitar, drum, singer) go to music tech. Two of them work at guitar center rosedale. One of them works at some music place where they fix gear and has regular contact with some big names. I guess they are building a guitar cab for Zakk Wylde or something. Now, granted it could have been all talk, they really made it sound like they had a lot of local and national contacts. Since they go to music tech, we would be able to use music techs studio's to record.

The thing I have realized is that, well this could be a good opportunity to do something cool, I am not sure if it is what I am supposed to be doing at this point in my life. Perhaps if it were a few years ago when I was in college it would have been something I would have loved to have done. Now that I am getting married and settling down a little, I would rather focus more on that I think. I can still play guitar and write music without a band. We are going to be building somewhat of a studio into our new house in June, and I am good friends with a drummer around here who can do drum tracks for me if I need them. Basically, at the risk of sounding cliche, I would rather stick with the band I am in right now and continue to work on my own music...

Just from viewing your situation, you made the choice..your settling in. You can take the leap or go with what is comfortable. I've done both, and the road you're taking is alot less risky and still gives you music if you want that.

I got my road bug bitten early in life (playing in bars and starting up bands when you're 16) and somewhat out of my system by the time I was 23. I miss it too sometimes.

Working on your own music can be fun, you set your pace and your own rules. I got into music for me, all the other things just kinda popped up as I went along.

Ya working on my own music is pretty sweet. I just need to stop myself from bringing my guitar into work.... I am working at Avis Rental Car in Osseo, and I am the only other person who works here besides the owner. I have my POD sitting right next to me, and I am going to pick up my guitar in a few hours. I just got done watching a California Guitar Trio video. Sometimes it gets pretty slow here...
