Michael Angelo is a hack compared to Shawn Lane:

Any one who can play rhythm and lead parts at the same time, on two necks, then flip them upside down, and switch back and forth between rhythm and lead on each hand, while shredding his ass off, is no hack in my book. I'd kill for his talent.

I agree Tim. After watching that video, almost every guitarist is a hack compared to him. I am giving up guitar for sure now. Thanks..

In that case, is the T100 up for grabs?

Re: The emotion you get out of this solo, WOW

He is good for sure. There are a lot of guys that are as fast but he was the first. And he plays clean. I think he is ONE of the best.
He is also a hell of a nice guy and definitely has some spectacular stuff he does.

Having said that nobody can play it all - for example can he instantly switch to sounding like Vai or Yngwie - no. Does he use 2 handed tapping like T.J. Helmerich - no. Does he improvise chromatically and sound like Brett Garsed - no. Does he have the vibrato of Uli Roth or Michael Schenker - no. Does he have the tone of EVH - no.
To say that every other guitarist is a hack is not a very accurate assessment in my book. Ever see Stanley Jordan play 2 guitars? Now there is a player who can use two hands.

Nobody has it all. Michael Angelo is definitely a top player - as good as they come. But there are others who have different abilities and things to offer that are just as amazing.

I think the whole point is that like others, he's damn good at what he has chosen to do. And Tim, if Keith tried to do what Michael does, his poor old body would self destruct. I didn't like that first clip one bit except for the fact that it was fast. The rhythm was off time which gets on my nerves, it has no toe tapping quality. Music = Melody. That solo work contained no melody whatsoever. You can train an ape to do that.

He can play no doubt about that, he is clean, he is very technical, but he doesn't do nothing for me. He plays with emotion, I can't deny that, every player does. But his style is just plain booring. Too much simple scale runs, I like cool phrasing and melodies more.

Re: The emotion you get out of this solo, WOW

I'm not really into the hyper fast noodling school of players, but that solo bit may work for the song considering the title (I haven't heard it, but it looks like it is called Time Traveler). Maybe he was going for a "dissonant 80's video game music" thing in that bit. One things for sure, if I ever wrote a tune that required something like that in it, I couldn't pull it off...

I usually bash those types of players, and don't really hold them in high regard (Yngwie, Tony Macalpline, and Paul Gilbert are at the top of my "shredder" list). But I stumbled into a Angelo seminar at a local music store recently and was quite impressed. He plays very clean, bends well, and has a decent vibrato (when he wants too). I liked his tone on that particular day too (he was using Korean Deans for the most part through two DSL50's in stereo. Basically store stock stuff)... must've been in his fingers. As I mewntioned earlier, I got his "speed kills" video.
If your interested PM, I should be able to send it through ICQ. Its a big file, and will take awhile, so if you don't have DSL or a cable modem don't bother PMing me.

I personally do not care how it was built as long as it is a good playing/sounding instrument.
