I saw him touring with Tony MacAlpine and Dave LaRue in Planet X, Holy wow batman, SMOKIN!
They have different guys in the band a lot, all monster players.

Re: Derek Sherinian...
he was the only real rock entertainer dude in the dream theater IMHO.
One of my fav keyboard players.
And he can play guitar, he is a HUGE fan of guitar players, I've heard that he wanted to play 2nd gtr in Alice Cooper's band but he stick with keyboards because that's what he does the best."There is nothing more fearful than imagination without taste" - Johann Wolfgang von Goethe

Re: Derek Sherinian...
He never really seemed to fit in with Dream Theater, at least to me. (Change of Seasons, Falling Into Infinity, Once in a LIVEtime) He's got this look on his face that's kind of intense, a lot of creepy. It's like he's staring at a point in space. He's a great keyboard player though.
He did play guitar in Nightmare Cinema. (Dream Theater with members switching instruments)Occupy JCF

Re: Derek Sherinian...
Derek is awesome. Agreed, he really was the only member of Dream theater that had a little character. I love DT - they are one of my favorite bands - but he added some much needed personalty to the band.
I first saw him on the "Awake" tour. He sat at the keboard, in jeans and a T-Shirt, smoking a cigarette. Then, on the FII tour, he had a little riser for his gear, lava lamps, a rug, etc. He really was developing a neat persona within the group.
Jordan is also phenomenal, but I wish they would have kept Derek.

Re: Derek Sherinian...
Musically he fit in the band but the fans didn't liked him, I guess majority of the DT fans don't like real rock'n'roll attitude, stage presence and groupies. Portnoy said that they let him do whatever he wanted, he partied, banged the chicks etc. the fans didn't liked that and DT let Derek go. I would be dissapointed to have such fans."There is nothing more fearful than imagination without taste" - Johann Wolfgang von Goethe

Re: Derek Sherinian...
Thats interesting... I said to myself half way through the song during a tempo change "Damn this sounds like DT". Now I know why!
DAMN impressive especially for a keyboardist!Imagine, being able to be magically whisked away to... Delaware. Hi... Im in... Delaware...

Re: Derek Sherinian...
+1 what's already said. derek is AWESOME. not so much his playing in DT (i think jordan rud-ass smokes him technically speaking, and kevin moore had a more emotional style imho...derek's somewhere in the middle for me), but he as a person.
watch the 5 years in a livetime dvd, with the audio commentary from 2004. that's kickass! there are a few videos from derek playing with DT in japan on the awake tour. like described above, he was dressed "normal" etc while just being a hired gun. once he became a MEMBER, it was like an overnight transformation according to the other band members by the time they we're on the FII tour, he was like in full throttle with the lava lamps, the shades, the candles, the shirts, the carpets etc...
moreover, there are a few behind the scenes shots on this video, also from the time with derek. at one point when they were recording FII there's a scene where derek is dancing disco style and is basically acting totally crazy very funny to watch. btw, at the end of this scene there's a famous derek quote:
"show business is my life"
yeah...sums it up nicely

Awwww, c'mon... there's keyboardists out there who know how to rock. They aren't all Yanni and Dennis DeYoung.
Rick Wakeman, Keith Emerson, and others I can't think of right now all knew how to let loose.

Re: Derek Sherinian...
he doesn't play guitar on his solo albums, he has guests like Zakk, Yngwie, Sykes, Stevens, Di Meola, Holdsworth etc."There is nothing more fearful than imagination without taste" - Johann Wolfgang von Goethe

Re: Derek Sherinian...
Oh... well wtf then! I thought some parts sounded like some of Yngwies playing too, which is pretty damn hard to mistake. Then it sounded like DT... thats what impressed me, I thought he had that wide range of guitar playing abilities! Doh! the best part is that this song is about me and my brother"There is nothing more fearful than imagination without taste" - Johann Wolfgang von Goethe
