Re: Animosity between my band and other local band

Good thinking Rich - always a man of sense!
Its not the headline we'd be handing over. If we organise a gig we generally go on 2nd or 3rd and have another one or two bigger local bands on after us. We're still building a name for ourselves really.

Re: Animosity between my band and other local band

I say fuk them. If its for fun, turn the other cheek. If music is your career than kill all that stand in your way. Why do you need other bands to get you gigs. Get your own frikkin gigs. If they don't like your cocky attitute, tell them to beat off. Its all about attitude bro. Good or bad... its always a good thing when other bands are talking about you. If they love you... great. If they hate you... great. Do you really give a crap how another band feels about you or how their friends feel about you. They are never gonna vote for you in a battle of the bands anyway. They are now the enemy. Fuk them.
The bands that we played with back in the 80's.. many of whom made it big... all had one thing in common. They were ruthless, cut throat bastards that took their craft VERY seriously and weren't out to make friends with other bands unless it benefited them in a monetary fashion. Crowds are another story. Alienate the crowd and your fuk'd.
This ain't Little House on the Prairie bro. Mending fences is for cowboys who need to keep their cattle on their property. I will give you a few examples of bands that were total bastards and would rip your throat out if you got in their way when they were coming up..
      Anthrax
      Twisted Sister
      Red Alert (they became Steelheart)

There were a few nice bands I guess you could say.
Zebra were a bunch of nice guys. It was easy for them to be nice because their roadies would tear your throat out for them.
Musicians are so frikkin sensitive nowadays.
The music business is KILL OR BE KILLED. Don't sweat the gossip amongst other bands. They are just jealous or intimidated or maybe your band really does suck. In that case.... forget everything I just said!!

          Haha, Cheers.
Some good points. I reckon that itll be a cross between Rich's and JGCable's posts that'll my course of action.
But then again, fuck the other bands, as said above. Its like one or maybe two bands... We're mates with at least 5 decent local bands.
          Woo!

Re: Animosity between my band and other local band

Winning a battle of the bands doesn't mean crap unless there is a record deal as first prize. Its just a local popularity contest. The singer in my band Aftermath is argueably the best singer I have ever heard who isn't famous. He sounds like a cross between Bonjovi and Vince Neil. He does alot of that Kareoke crap for fun and to pick up chicks. He has never won a contest. He always comes in second and loses to a guy who #1. can't sing. #2. Doesn't know the words and is just hammered. Why. Its a local popularity contest. Thats what a local battle of the bands is. It has nothing to do with talent. Piss on them. They aren't supporting your band anyway. Give them something to remember when you play. I make sure I leave my mark at every gig no matter how big or small or friendly or hostile the crowd or other bands are. Its my way of spreading the love. I will tell you one thing... people remember me after a gig. I used to be that crazy punk ass shreader who weighed 126 and had hair down to my ass. Now I am that old crazy asshole who shreads on guitar and can tear you a new asshole if you don't watch out. The common thread... SHREAD. Its my gospel. Whats yours? What do you want the crowd or other bands to think when somebody mentions you or your bands name?? Its an important question. If you answer is "I want them to think I am a nice friendly guy who just wants to make friends and have everybody love me so I can get gigs and not piss anybody off" BRO..... I know thats not your answer. Metal is an aggressive sport. This ain't no frikkin badminton. This is serious.

You've got a point. I mean the only reason I wanted things to stay friendly was so we could make contacts with the bigger bands that come through town but fuck it we'll get them ourselves.

Make friends with the bigger bands management and with the club owners. Get a booking agent to book gigs for you. They only charge 10% and they usually get more money for you to play so it doesn't cost you anything. Find out what booking agency or management company the larger bands use and call or email them. Send them a demo or a band press kit. Start thinking about it as a business and not a Breakfast Club.

Re: Animosity between my band and other local band

We're gonna do that eventually but we've only been together since April and only been gigging regularly since September. But we've already got a couple of contacts in signed bands. One who supported Cradle of Filth on their UK tour and another who have been playing all round Europe these past few months.

Re: Animosity between my band and other local band

The part about joining in with the same management is gonna be tricky, cuz the whiners will pull their strings to get you kicked off. Management will place you on a bill with them, and they know it, so they'd rather have you kicked than on "their" bill.

I'd definitely approach the other band(s) one-to-one and see what THEY say, because you may just be hearing the Grapevine. The story always sounds worse than it is once it gets passed through the vine, so go face to face. Chances are they've heard that YOU were saying the same things about THEM.
WHatever it is, nail it down to specifics. If it was just words and they're being girly about it, mention to them that "it's just words then, aye?"
If they take it more seriously than that, then let them have their dramatic overdose and leave them in the dust.
Build your name in the smaller places and smaller crowds on your own, because the voice of the People that come to see you and follow YOUR band will eventually grow large and loud enough to fill bigger venues.

Remember how Metallica started? It still works, if you wanna work at it.
I want to depart this world the same way I arrived; screaming and covered in someone else's blood

Re: Animosity between my band and other local band

Newc, thats the way we've talked through as a band and decided to take. We dont need the bands. We've got a fairly big gig lined up for after xmas. What we're going to do is arrange everything ourselves and not wait for handouts and not rely on anyone apart form ourselve, cos everyone has a million and one personal agenda's so fuck them all.
                        Should be ok.

Re: Animosity between my band and other local band

                          Interesting update!
I was out drinking and seeing some local bands on Friday and ended up knocking around with some lasses. Now the drummer of the above band we've had 'issues' with was hassling one of the lasses (they have an on/off kinda relationship) and he was getting aggressive and he grabbed her by the arms and had hurt her. Now thats just not on, so I went up to the guy and told him to give it a rest and that she didnt want to speak to him etc etc (I was pretty drunk I dont remember it too well Im just reiterating what has been said to me), he then started mouthing off at me, which apparently I stayed calm at all the way through. Then he allegedley started trying to start a fight with me (he's just some tubby emo bitch so I wasnt to bothered) and normally I wouldve kicked fuck out of him, but for some reason I got in his face and just said 'Fuck off', and then walked away.
Next day - awful hangover, but thankful phone calls from the girls.
That other band are going to gig for a while as theyre recording but the way I see things now, is that they can seriously fuck off. I mean they've been all self righteous in the past, punishing the whole band for the actions of one member (dropping us off unannounced gigs) and now their drummer starts trying to get violent with me? Fuck this shit.
The balls in their court. I think both of our bands have had their moments of dick-ishness now, and I couldnt care less who we have as 'friends' in the scene.

Sounds like a bloody soap opera. The real question should be... did you bang any of the lasses you were hanging with and if not.... why?? Thats the real issue.
