Re: XBox360 and the Evil that is WalMart

I'm 55 and I have raised my kid through most of all the video stuff and I still don't get it. I bot this that and the other thing and he has been playing for years and tears. He will buy a 360. What ever happened to "going out to play". I'm done with this 'cuz my kid is 22. But, I see my grandkids coming home from school and going into a rec-room with a big screen and submerging themselves into a private space that does nothing more than build their eye-hand co-ords. This video game crap will undermine our society. I think video-games suck.

[/ QUOTE ] Yes it is. What end result comes from someone playing a video game? Practice does make perfect. A 'tar player can show his talent to real bodies. A video pro can show his talent to a screen. The fans may e-mail him and he may be a ledgendary cybergreat. That is too sad. Enjoy the games as adults. But, don't let your kids lose the human factor in their young lives.

Re: XBox360 and the Evil that is WalMart

Sure, let them go outside where they learn things from the other kids like where to find the best porn online, or where to buy the best drugs from in school or the neighborhood, or which chick on the block puts out more, right?
Or better still, let them roam the streets and get run over by a drunk or a kid with a driver's license or just some idiot who can't watch the road and doesn't know what a brake pedal does, or maybe picked up by the local child molester.

Or maybe just let them learn those old-fashioned games kids play outside, like "lock you in the trunk of this abandoned car", "push you into the water knowing you can't swim (or wouldn't want to swim in THAT water anyway)", "catch the dirty needle I found in the gutter", or just "get beat like a dog because I'm a neanderthal who likes to hit".

No, you can't protect kids from everything by shutting them up in the house, and video games don't offer much in the way of developing useful social skills, but there's a whole different world "out there" than when you or even I was "that age".
It's fine to let the kids outside. It's fine to encourage them to go outside. It's fine to DRAG them outside. It's NOT fine for them to be outside without some sort of adult guardian, though.

The counter to all you said is let all the kids outside. As a group playing, there is little risk. We have been so blownout by rare events that the kids are becomming isolated and withdrawn. It is a sad, sad situation. And it will only get worse as the media dwells on the bad stuff. I am just glad that my kid is all growed up. I don't know what the answer is.

So rather than get serious about crime and violence, we pretend we can protect our children 24-7 by letting them play video games and/or standing outside watching them. Yeah, it'd be great to be a kid with some adult hovering all the time.

Still trading at 27.91 on nasdaq, Tim. Keep plugging away and I am sure it will get to 29.03 again.

Well, good luck to you. I'm still reeling from the galactic shit my Nortel stock took a few years ago. I was one of the lucky ones to sell a pile just months before the enema. The remaining stock is trading at a whopping $3.04, last time I checked.

I hope to die young enough to leave this problem to my wife and kids.

You must be able to have a balance of being outside and playing computer games! I'm 17 and im at university studying music. Yeah I used to play a lot of Mega drive, playstation and PS2 but I also did/do a lot of practising, socialising etc. Hopefully your kids will realise that theres more to live than gaming.

As for playing outside, it can be great fun and I think getting hurt ie. cuts and bruises etc was all part of the learning experience. It teaches kids how to be sensible.

Just had a guy on TV here in Cleveland that was robbed at gunpoint of his XBox360 after picking it up from the store he'd ordered it from during the summer. Black on Black crime issue also being stated in this instance.

One guy put a gun to his head and the other grabbed his box!

Damn!
