• Forum etiquette: Thanking others for their replies

Guys, I just joined another forum about a month ago and have close to 100 posts, so I'm still quite the newbie there. But I've been on the JCF for a long time, as well as many other forums for the greater part of six years... so here's my problem. I posted a question there, being a newbie and all, I was sent a nonchalant private message from a longtime member, subject heading "Thanks for no thanks", with the body text saying that I should consider taking the time to thank those who offer advice or answers, and that he won't be replying any longer to any of my topics. Ooooookaaaaaaaayyyyy...

Is there a hard-and-fast rule anywhere that says you have to explicitly thank someone for their replies and contribution to a thread you post asking a question All these years I've been on the internet, thanks are taken for granted and you IMPLICITLY give gratitude when you reply back to your thread after reading the advice or answers of others.

I certainly never expect thanks in return for sharing my wealth of knowledge (or lack thereof). I'm contributing to a greater cause, the forum as a whole, for others to come along and read if they wish. If someone finds my posts useful, great. If not, that's fine too. But I feel good because I enjoy posting and contributing to a community, not for expecting explicitly-stated thanks.

I'm not angry at all, just a bit shocked that my paradigm of how I view internet communities has been rocked... it shakes your inner core. But the guy replied to my apology, and apologized himself for overreacting, so it's all good. He explained that it gets tiresome to seem like you're posting and not being acknowledged for your efforts. That I understand, even though that's not how I view things. I just assume people implicitly appreciate whatever knowledge I happen to share.

I just never knew you had to explicitly give thanks on a message board. But in case I've offended anyone here with my seeming lack of gratitude, I now publicly offer my apologies and my deepest gratitude and just assume in the future that any post has implied thanks for your time, effort, and love of sharing knowledge with the community. Just assume so that I can continue just having fun posting here without worrying about formalities like explicitly-posted gratitude. It's more relaxed and enjoyable this way... like a nice family conversation.

Thanks all. And thank you for any replies of advice I may receive for my situation at hand. And thank you for this wonderful forum. Now I sound like that Alanis Morissette song... Thank you India, Thank you terror, Thank you disillusionment, Thank you frailty, Thank you consequence, Thank you thank you silence!

    Breeeeeeaaathe...

No. And thank you!!! What a bunch of shit. The one thing about our board, is that the "thanks" are real and not gratuitus (SP). And thank me for posting.

I can't believe you know the words to an Alanis Morissette song. Oh, wait, you're in Canada with her, aren't you?

It wasn't the Acoustic Guitar Forum... I've been there for over a year! Still considered a newbie there though, since I rarely visit the place. I have my Taylor, I don't need anything from them any more. ......... Oh man, that's SUCH a bad attitude to have, certainly one that the JCF hates, guys who come in for a cool deal and then leave. Big props and thanks to the Acoustic Guitar Forum for being the "JCF of the acoustic world"! I'll be back someday, I promise.

I Googled the Alanis lyrics. But that argument probably holds no water considering she originated from the city I live in. You got me!!!

But many thanks for the replies, I thankingly thank you for your thankful thanks! (It's starting to not sound like a real word anymore, hahahahahaahah. )

I must insist to thank you for bringing up the thankless task of getting all our yahoos to say, "Thank yoooooooo".

I feel just as you do. I only regularly post at a couple of other forums and it has kind of bummed me sometimes that after carefully wording a lengthy response to a cry for assistance that the thread quickly disappears off the front page, without knowing whether the response has been any help or even noticed by OP. But in the end, I don't really care. The info's out there now, whether they read it or not is up the them.

I feel the same when the original poster doesn't even come back and acknowledge the thread they started in the first place. That's always kinda bugged me.
