• Brian Setzer Orchestra at 930 Club, DC

Posted this at another guitar site and thought some of you guys may be interested.

Saw this Stray Cat perform last night at the 930 Club in DC with his big band. Wow. I don't think I can say that I hate christmas music any longer. I went with a friend that is a long time Setzer freak and was there to put up with the christmas stuff for the handful of Rockabilly songs I knew he would play. We got there 2 hours early and secured a spot almost front and center to the stage. The opening act were the Slaptones, 3 Rockabilly girls with their dad. Not shabby, they did a few perkins tunes a Muddy Waters tune, the chick on slide was fun to listen to on that one, and a couple other standards. Kind of a rockibilly Dixie Chicks.

Brian came on at 10 and just went non stop for almost 2 hours. The set list was

1. Dig That Crazy Santa Claus
2. This Cat's on a Hot Tin Roof
3. Boogie Woogie Santa Claus
4. Dirty Boogie
5. Winter Wonderland
6. Sleigh Ride
7. Santa Claus is Back in Town
8. Everybody's Waitin' For The Man with the Bag
9. Caravan
10. Pipeline
11. Stray Cat Strut / You're a Mean One, Mr. Grinch
12. Jump Jive An' Wail
13. 'Zat You Santa Claus?
14. Let it Snow! Let it Snow! Let it Snow!
15. Run Rudolph Run
16. Gene & Eddie
17. Blue Christmas
18. Jingle Bell Rock
19. Rat Pack Boogie
20. Fishnet Stockings
21. Rock this Town
22. Nutcracker Suite
23. Rumble in Brighton
24. Gettin' in the Mood
25. Jingle Bells

Brian of course played all his gretcsh's thru a Bassman head. The tone was typical nashville twang. You know, that dude can play. He is almost 50 and was dancing, playing and singing like a 20 year old. Bassman was sick with his stand up. He was insane, just stood there and raped that thing while jumping around. Crazy man, you had to see him play, he was a hoot. The drummer was on fire too. That guy has some monster chops. In fact the whole freaking band was loooney. If they weren't playing they were hootin, hollerin and dancing. Not going to get too indepth here, I just had a blast watching the guy. If you get the chance to go see him, do so. He really is worth the time and effort.

Did he have the whole horn section with him? I saw him in 98, and I have to agree, he absolutely rips.
Its a complete catastrophe. But Im a professional, I can rise above it. LOL

Four Trumpets, 4 trombones and the 4 sax/flute/clarinet players. He did such a damn good job of arranging the songs that everone of them had a moment to rip a bit. The drummer was just insane. He did the trio parts on a 3 piece kit and was hitting them so hard I was sure they were going to shatter. Brian for his part leaves room for everyone else. You have to see his version of Pipeline live to believe it. Just him and the 4 trombone players, and get this, he plays the rythme while they do the traditional guitar part, wicked insane.

I've only recently scored a copy of the BSO Live In Japan DVD. It's bloody brilliant!

Setzer totally rules. He's very underappreciated.

I'd like to see him sometime, although I'd end up going alone because no one I know is into him.

I'm sorry I missed that. I knew it was going to be a good show. Most people don't realize how good Brian really is until they see him live.

Let me say this, I have never enjoyed xmas music. Within minutes though, I was having the time of my life. That guy can make any song sound great. The interplay between him and the audience and the other band members was truely inspiring. Even if you go alone it's worthwile. Sorry you missed the fun Mike, maybe next time.
