Re: CRT Rear Projection TV Question
From a technical standpoint, I still think CRT rear projection is the way to go and have the best picture, but they are quickly going the way of the dinosaur. Prices have come WAY down on those. However, the bad thing is that most TV companies are shifting their focus to the other technologies (plasma, LCD, LCOS, DLP, etc.), so the companies that are still making CRT RPTVs are focusing mostly on price points rather than quality. But overall CRT compared to other technologies gives the best black levels, consumes a lot less energy than plasmas, and large screen sizes are available at low prices. CRT RPTV also has a more "flim-like" image while some of the other tecnologies tend to have a more "video like" image....that's subjective, but I prefer the look of film. Also, some of the other technolgies are stuck at one native resolution and all other input resolutions have to be converted. Sometimes their internal scalers suck, which may lead to the purchase of an external scaler for optimum picture quality. My CRT RPTV will display both 480p and 1080i in their native format....not upscaled, which is nice. It's a Sony KP-46WT510 and I absolutely LOVE the picture it gives. VERY film-like and 3 dimensional.
While shopping keep in mind that most showroom floors are NOT at all condusive to judging the picture quality of a set. Also, if you are interested in DLP make sure the rainbow effect doesn't bother you....some don't notice it at all....it is miserable for other viewers.
