CRT Rear Projection TV Question

It's time for me to start looking for a new TV.
I want another CRT Rear Projection TV to replace my old one.
I have plenty of room for it.(depth wise)
The requirments for it are:
1-The cabinet must be black or have very little silver showing.
2- Around 40 min - 51 inch max wide (10x12 living room)
3- I use cable (comcast) for input.
Other than that I don't know squat about them or what brand is best.
I can afford up to $2,000

Why not go for a DLP instead?

DLP is projection as well. Just requires a much smaller housing.
Regardless... if you went with a traditional type projection unit, HD or not, I think Toshiba makes the best.
For DLP... Samsung all the way.

Mitsubishi 55" it's 50.5 inches by roughly 50 inches and very good quality.

I have to agree. We sell them, and I service them. At this point in time, I would buy a DLP if it were me.

Local shops today should have them on serious sale - there's a Magnavox rear projection HD-ready going for $1000 at a local WalMart, and they've got a full-on digital (not rear projection) for about $2200.
Comparing them side by side, I prefer the clarity and overall brightness of the picture of the digital rather than the HD projector.

I realize that, I have a Toshiba Talen. I was just saying because DLP technology is better than the standard projection system. Plus you get the added versatility of storage space underneath the screen.

ok, went TV hunting today.
Yup, you guys were correct in steering me towards a DLP.
I was really inpressed with the 46" Samsung HDTV DLP, w/ HD Tuner.
I forgot to get the model no# [img]/images/graemlins/crazy.gif[/img]
It was priced around $1800 without a stand.
Very nice picture, and it had no glare at all.
Comes w/ 30 day in store warranty and 1 year manufacture.
Is it a good idea to get extended warranty?
How long does the bulb last?
My wife said I could get one after X-mass [img]/images/graemlins/smile.gif[/img]
but she wants to pick the stand for it.
Any links to any sites that sell TV stands?

Usually your best bet is the stand that comes with that particular TV as an option. Most DLPs are tall and slim and somewhat front heavy, which means they tip over VERY easily. The stand that came with mine has a built in clamp that holds the TV in place. It's virtually impossible to knock it over. Plus, the stand is designed for the TV, and is the same shape. It would look weird with another stand.

Not true. Since the light/optic engine is the bulk of the weight, they are very stable. If you tip one over..IMO, you got no business owning one. I work on these things every week. Mitsubishi, JVC, LG/Zenith, Samsung..etc. And, my .02(not that almost 30 years in the business means anything)the Mitsubishi is at the top of my DLP list. Once again, this is something I have first hand knowledge of, not internet and consumer reports.

As for extended warranty, usually they don't cover the lamp. Check the fine print..a few do. If the extended warranty is a few hundred bucks for a 3 to 5 year..buy it. A light engine for an LG is still going for over $800. And a Mitsubishi Op engine is even more. If you watch a lot of TV, your lamp will last about a year and a half on average. Improper cool down is the worst enemy. Never remove power to the unit until the lamp cool down cycle is complete. Lamps average around $200.
