Re: Do you guys have college degrees?

The JC route is a good way to go. It saves money and as long as you can take those units with you, get the BA. A college education is not the meal ticket it used to be. What I got out of my BA was the realization that I did it. The best part about being so motivated in the late '60's and early '70's is it kept me out of the draft. What motivates students now has to come from within.

Unless you are going to start your own business, it is going to be very difficult to make a decent living without a degree, period. A college degree is today's H.S. Diploma. For me, the degree was merely a formality on the way to graduate school. B.A. in Political Science from Tulane in '92 and J.D. from Loyola New Orleans in 1996.

You may also want to consider a skilled trade, and go to school for that. I have an old friend who makes a solid six figure living turning wrenches on Mercedes.

Exactly. I have a B.S. degree and it has allowed me to open more doors than I can explain. I also have my own business and make more money than I ever thought I would. But I never would have gotten the opportunity without the degree. The degree is just the key. You have to make the rest happen.

Look at it this way: You're 19 now, and in 4 years you'll be 23, whether you have a degree or not. Would you rather be 23 with a degree, or 23 without one?

If you have a solid opportunity to go to college for 4 years (to LEARN, not to party), take it.

Stay in school if you can. I know it seems like it will take forever, but before you know it your done.

Thanks again, I think Newc's last point was a good one, thanks man.

Looked like a simple question. Simple answer...."No".

Re: Do you guys have college degrees?

And I learned that without any college degree. Sometimes a simple "No"..or "Yes" is all it takes. Expand too much, and you sink your own ship.

AS in network engineering... specifically NetWare Engineer..

That being said, I was making 80k a year working construction, and almost everyone I knew with a BS or less was making half that working at some computer firm...

I also sometimes make $40/hr for tech support, though most of the people I do work for I wouldn't charge... being friends and all.

hahaha, thats a great little animation.

i did some dialup/email phone support for a local ISP. it was the most retarded boring crap ever, but i stuck with it for 2 years because it paid 11 bucks an hour and i got to sit on my ass and be online all day. i finaly couldnt take the same idiotic questions from people everyday and put in my two weeks and left.

not going back into that

i imagine working with computers would be great if you didn't have to talk to 95 year old people about setting up their email and dialup connections for 3 hours at a time

Re: Do you guys have college degrees?

Well I may as well chime in.. I'm now going after a BS in applied physics.. if all goes well, I will be kind of focusing in electronics and instrumentation and can move on to studying electronics/electrical engineering after I graduate..
If I specialize in instrumentation used for research and technical applications, I should do pretty well I think. There are even part-time paid jobs for undergrad students in this field who can run computers and put together equipment for research and stuff.

Some of the classes I have to take can get to be a bit dull (the first quarter of general physics, on mechanics is a good example) but I think it's pretty fun and interesting to get into the lab and get my hands dirty playing with all the gadgets.

Before I graduated high school, I was really lazy and I didn't want to go to college because I felt like it was "jumping through hoops" and doing what "the man" says you have to do. I even skimped on taking math my senior year because I wanted to have as few classes as I could get away with.. it sure would have been nice if I had taken at least trig that year so I could be a little further ahead in my math than I am now...

Anyway now that I'm on track and doing something practical that I enjoy, and I have a thirst for knowledge (I love my math classes now.. I used to hate them!) I'm glad I ended up getting into college... even if my mom *did* have to push me to enroll at the last minute in the nearest university to home when I couldn't financially work out going to the school I wanted to
