Not sure I agree with you on that.

I was dismayed that I not only had to buy all the sofware, but I had to sign up and pay a subscription to play. But once I got into it, it wasn't half bad.

wow. you have to pay to play. I play Call of duty UO and call of duty 2 on the internet and don't pay a dime for it. that's bullshit you have to pay a subscription.

MMORPG's are pay to play almost without expection, usually they are less than 50 cents a day. They have huge bandwidth costs, huge equipment costs, little downtime if any, full time support staff, full time developent and troubleshooting staffs. I'd be interested to see what Blizzard or Sony pay for connectivity. The game world in EVE Online is spread across over 100 blade servers. Pricey!

I Beta tested Galaxies just before it was released and I remember thinking be careful what you wish for.My friends and I used to say, it would be great if they made a video game that was so deep you did virtually everything. Then I played this game and said...ENOUGH ALREADY I just want a freakin light sabre .Game was just way to time consuming for me...that and transport sucked.Once you were on a planet there were no vehicles you walked everywhere (I am talking auto run for 40-50 minutes sometimes)and that was if you did not run right into a nest of something and get killed. As far as pay to play there are free places like Blizzard with free servers for games like Diablo. However these are usually really laggy and always hacked and full of cheaters with codes.I do not mind paying if the site is well run and security is in place.

Re: Wow, Star Wars Galaxies stinks!

My first online gaming experience was the original Tribes. Great game once the first batch of mods came out, but because there was no "official" server, you had to have specific mods or patches depending on which server you played on, and the conditions varied a lot due to bandwidth. EverQuest was next in line for me, and although I hate paying to play and find the game to be in swift decline, at least you don't have to go hunting for patches or worry about cheaters and hackers. I tried Rainbow Six: Raven Shield and found the servers to be full of cheating morons and/or hosted on machines that couldn't handle more than a handful of players.

I'm waiting for Lord of the Rings Online now...
