seriously, DON'T. you will thank me when you retire and you have money to live on instead of being a 75 year old greeter at walmart. i have a modest collection (19 total) of useable (not custom shop pieces) guitars. i wish i could muster the ability to sell most of them because now all i see are the wasted years of debt it took to aquire them. i don't even play most of them....or look at them...or even remember which ones i have....

but if you must collect, be picky and don't buy on impulse!!!

hey man, if you don't have the control to manage your finances and put yourself in debt b/c of your guitars that's your problem.

Don't tell this guy not to start collecting guitars b/c you don't know how to manage your money properly.

Welcome to the board. After 9 posts this sure is a great way to start out here at the JCF. I'd hold the hostile posts until you've been around a while and get to know who it is you are attacking.

Re: advice on starting up a guitar collection?

the most important thing to consider when you are buying guitars like this is to not pay too much. that may seem obvious but it escapes people sometimes. i've paid too much a few times but usually i end up buying at better than average prices. unless the guitar is super extremely rare, all you need to do is wait another week or two - another one will come up. repeat. another one will come up. they always do.

I can't manage my money either. I'm hooked on cheap beer and cheap guitars. And nothing sounds better than 12 cheap guitars after 12 cheap beers.

Re: advice on starting up a guitar collection?

My advice would be:

Make sure you can afford to buy the guitar you're considering -whether that be monthly installments or whatever, don't over commit.

Make sure you're buying a guitar for the 'right' reasons for you i.e. don't buy guitars for status, showing pics here or because it's a good price, unless any or all of those 3 things are of great importance to you. Like clothes, if you ain't totally sure, walk away cos you may well never use them!

don't know how it works in the UK. in the US you'll get shafted unlubed with rusty steel pinecones on trades unless you're dealing privately.

The trading route may not 'work' financially in the long run, but if you can't afford your dream guitar right now, then it's probably your only option.....

well i use ebay so i buy an amp or whatever, play around for a few months then whemn i get more money i sell old amp and buy a new bigger amp. doing that i've been able to go form a shitty marshall to a great behringer to a nice enough marshall half stack.

1 Tele
1 Soloist

i used to have a mg50 and it was so awful it was unbelievable - the budget marshalls are utter trite IMo but the behringer GMx amp was fantastic really really sweet. the only reason i traded it was because it would be nice to have real good marshall rather than a fantastic emulation of one - so i traded it for a half stack, 100 quid and a load of mint Rainbow LPs off my dad :P

I didn't post anything hostile. The dude said he racked up some debt in buying guitars and he highly suggested that the other guy NOT start a collection based on his experience.

bottom line, don't buy things you can't afford. If you can afford it, and know how to manage your money, go for it.
