The point is to lighten up and not jump on someones ass for making a light hearted comment about guitar collecting. You are new here. If you were here long enough, you would have known that the post you felt compelled to reply to in a negative mannor, was light hearted. You don't know anyone here so why would you jump in and start shit? I have nothing against Newbs accept the ones who act like you. This is a great place where there is a lot of valuable info. Sit down, pull up a chair and LISTEN for a while and get to know the folks here. They are a good bunch of people. None of them deserve to be talked to (or writen to in this case) from a brand new member like you spoke to MD. IMO, you were disrespectfull without being able to back it up. you could have made your point with a little less attitude. Especially with an Avatar that states "I will kill you."

Personally I wouldn't set out to start a collection (says the guy who lost count after buying his 16th guitar in a 30 day period). If you play or have some ambition to play, buy things that fill sonic holes in your collection. Building the collection will take care of itself and you'll get more enjoyment out of the guitars you own.

Personally, I could care a less about a "collection". I wanna find the perfect guitar, and at the age of 25, im on my 25th guitar

It truly never ends, and the GAS never stops. However, after playing so many items, I now am pretty sure I know what would keep me happy for the next few years. I wanna get past the GAS, and onto the recording, and enjoying my equiptment, rather then lamenting past sales, and dreaming about "what would make me more content"

Re: advice on starting up a guitar collection?

What are you looking for, numbers, or unique pieces? Sometimes, uniques can be had for a very low price (hence not so hot models at the time) and others wayyyyy too much.

Basically, you've got to decide what you want to collect, high dollar pieces, or low dollar pieces, or rare, or whatever.

My collection is 2 Soloists, an Ibanez 7 string, a PRS, a Strat, An ovation acousitc, and a Gibson acoustic. I've owned as many as 40 at one time a (at that point, it was mainly Jacksons, Charvels, with 2 Fenders, and 2 Fernandes).

Set yourself a budget, this is "guitar budget". I wouldn't suggest charging shit, unless you've got the self control to stop, and pay it off before buying another one.

Re: advice on starting up a guitar collection?

As long as you are just buying what you want to either play it or to look at/admire it, then it's a matter of what you can afford. If you are looking at it as an investment by getting some guitars and selling them years later for hopefully a profit, then don't. There are far far far better places to invest your money. 95% of the time you will be letting them go for less that what you paid for them, that's if they don't get stolen or damaged. You would have to hold a guitar for over 50 years for it's value to exceed what you paid for it with inflation factored in.

Re: advice on starting up a guitar collection?

Mate, Im the UK too and I collect guitars. Ive got about 8 and a decent amp and Im 21. what you've got to do is decide what you're after, and read up about them so you know what you're looking for, so if you see a Charvel in a second hand shop, you'll know whether its a £150 crappy Charvette, or a £400 650xl.
If you aim to buy cheap and trade up, dont do it with Jacksons/Charvels. Only buy what there is a profitable market for. I bought and sold for a while till I had enough money, then I looked for a nice Charvel. Then I bought and sold, and looked for another. Let all your mates in college know you buy and sell guitars. Cos more often than not, the metal/rock guys will go, "Hmm, Ive got that Mexican Strat in my room I never play, If I get £100 for it, thats three good nights out for nothing!!!" then you buy it and sell it on for £250
But not at the same place
It takes a lot of time though. Spend a lot of time watching Ebay. I generally watch Ebay.co.uk and the classifieds here, cos in the States guitars general cheaper than they should be, and over here they're more expensive than they should be. I kinda get an idea for a middle value.
Keep your eyes open, keep checking on Loot www.loot.com and things like that. I got my 650xl from there. In case you dont know, neck through, active midboost, HSS 24 frets, binding, MOP inlays, metallic green and the good Schaller floyd rose copy. I paid £200. I havnt found one for under £300 yet, and they're not that common.
Theres also a surprising amount of Model series Charvels knocking around too if you look.

I moved out of my old flat this year and accidentally left behind 4 guitars worth of packing materials (cardboard boxes, bubble wrap, plastic foam, those foam packing peanuts) in a cupboard that Id meticulously tidied and saved for when I sell guitars on Ebay and need to post them out.
Needless to say I was charged £25 ($45) for the removal and disposal of them without them asking if I wanted them!!! D'oh!!!
