  • Last statements of executed offenders

    http://www.tdcj.state.tx.us/stat/executedoffenders.htm

some of the statements make you feel bad for them, until you read their criminal records.

this one freaked me out "Jane, Grace and all of you all, I know you think I did this, and I'm sure you think this is wonderful in you eyes. But, let me tell you something, there were two DNA tests run and none matched me. I wanted a third, but that never happened. Three people at different times confessed to killing these people - your parents. They did not know me. My request is that you get yourselves in church and pray for forgiveness because you are murdering me. I did not kill anyone in my life. If you will look at your house and the police report, there are several bullet patterns shot into the West wall over the bed and the East wall and North wall and your sister was in the front bedroom while 30 shots were fired. There's no way in hell she would have laid in that bed. If you think I did this, you need to think again. There were three people in the house and have confessed to it. Larry Ashworth in Fort Worth killed seven people. All I was asking for was a DNA and I could not get it. But get in church and get right with God. Jane, you know damn well I did not molest that kid of yours. You are murdering me and I feel sorry for you. Get in church and get saved. I really don't know what else to tell you."

My parents are both attorneys and they have shown me figures that show that (prior to DNA testing) as high as 30% of executed criminals could have been innocent

I work part time at the northern california innocence project. We've had a handful of exhonerations so far. It's really great stuff. At the same time, some of the letters you read from inmates are heartbreaking. Supprising ammounts of death row inmates are getting out these days based on DNA evidence.

This isn't meant as an anti-Clinton post, but just before he decided to run for President he wanted to make it look like he was tough on crime. The person in question was an Arkansas death row inmate who many believed was mentally incapacitated, unable to understand what he did or what was going to happen to him. After eating most of his last meal, he put his dessert aside and said that he would eat it when he got back.

As the Washington Times reported it on August 10, 2000,

"In 1992, Gov. Bill Clinton raced home from the presidential campaign trail to preside over the execution of Rickey Ray Rector, a brain-damaged Arkansas inmate and the first black man to be executed in Arkansas since 1960."

"At the time, liberals accused Mr. Clinton of hastily executing a lobotomized convict in order to portray himself as tough on crime."

"Rector's lawyers said that even though he could speak, his mental capacities were so impaired that he did not know what death was or understand that the people he shot were not still alive. Just as he walked to the death chamber, Rector set aside for later a slice of pecan pie from his last meal."

if you ignore the cost of executing criminals and the falsely accused offenders, death row moving slowly is a good thing.

Suspects have the right to a fair trial, when your life is on the line you have every right to try to save yourself.

that, and once you've been sentenced to death you deserve to rot in prison for a while.

It'd be unfair for someone to go on a killing spree only to be executed after trial.

they should have to suffer in prisin for 10 years or so

Re: Last statements of executed offenders

Capital punishment should be carried out in a more timely manner. After a person is convicted of the crime, there should be a very thorough review of the case prior to the execution and every effort should be made to be sure they have the right person. As far whats going on in Calif, concerning Tookie the founder of the crips, many hollywood crusaders and others are claiming that executing him sends the wrong message to gang members, I guess the idea of killing people and facing the possibility of getting executed is not as a good a deterent as killing people and getting away with it?????

I don't really care if it's a deterrant or not- I'm just satisfied that the person won't be doing it again. If it makes some other piece of scum think twice before killing someone, that's icing on the cake.

Re: Last statements of executed offenders

I agree the process should be sped up, with scientific evidence there is no question they are guilty. The cases where they have multiple witness's and DNA evidence, move em to the express lane of death row. It shouldn't take 10 years.

The prisons are filled with innocent people...even the guilty are innocent so some of the statements are expected.

I can understand the anti capital punishment people and I'm certain people were wrongly put to death in the past, that is not right.

And thus, he really wouldn't know that he wasn't coming back for his pecan pie. He killed people. He paid the price. To hell with McNaughton.

Re: Last statements of executed offenders

Yeah, I'm truly pro death penalty. BUT, only when they have DNA and witnesses or they are caught red handed or admit to it with proof.

If it is just circumstancial evidence, and or just witnesses, life in prison with appeals related to new evidence should be it and the death penalty should not possibly be an option. Witness are the worst form of evidence, and circumstancial is just that. It's all too flimsy to take a humans life for. Too much room for error.

I have PERSONALLY seen how fucked up the court system works in a murder trial, and I can say it can be such a disgusting travesty and three ring circus at times, I'm sickened.

I could tell a court horror story I went through with inlaws over a homicide that would impress and disturb you, but have a hard time re-living it all and really don't want to think about it anymore.

Lets just say, the court system can often be a joke, and is all about buddy system, behind the scenes corruption and who's lawyer or prosecutor is the best actor/liar.

I defended a second degree murder about 5-6 years ago. When it was over I was practically suicidal.

                            Never again.

As I read their last statements I was moved. At some points, my eyes were welling up with tears. How could they put someone to death is well beyond me. Our whole justice system needs an overhaul to stop the murder that is going on behind clsed prison doors.
