Thinking of grabbing one for Xmas. Seems like alot of choices out there. Plasma, LCD, rear-projection. Which one to get? Some are HD "ready". What's that mean? Please discuss.

HD Ready means you will have to BUY a separate HD reciever.
As for the rest, Plasma is said to be the best (and most expensive), but I like the DLP screens myself.

I have a 42" plasma that I would put up against anything. The HD picture is AWESOME! My tv is just a monitor, it doesn't have a tuner. So you have to get your HDTV signal either thru cable or satellite. A friend of mine just purchased the new Sony projection tv that has the highest resolution picture they have ever produced. It's a 50" and he paid 4k. He says it's awesome. How much $ are you wanting to spend?

I would make sure you do some comparisons at some stores if you can. There are good and bad in any Catagory. I have seen some standard rear projection TV's that blow away some cheaper Plasma TV's. From what I have seen, the DLP's are pretty consistent.

LCD's are great for still images which is what you see most times on a PC but there is a reason why most manufacturer's are dropping the LCD format and opting for Plasma or DLP. Every LCD TV I have seen looks crappy in my opinion. The picture almost always looks fake to me and there is such a huge difference when they go from a picture with a lot of white to a darker one.

I wouldn't be too concerned with TV resolution. You basicly have the standard TV resolutions that will still be with us for a while and the 2 HDTV resolutions.

Re: HDTV\'s

It's a matter of personal opinion. Some say that LCD's are too saturated and have too much pixel drag. Others cry saying that plasma's easily burn in. Goto a midlevel and a highend store and start looking for yourself. I personally love my 42" plasma.

One thing that I would like to mention though. Read carefully and make sure what your buying is not EDHD(think?) It has much less the standard amount of pixels horizontally and vertically then a "True" HD system. All the companies out there sell them as their low end HDTVs and depending on what you watch, you can really see the difference.

Or get it for free with an HD reciever and antenna and see a real HD signal in action.
Cable and satellite HD signals are compressed and are not a true HD quality signal.

They will keep coming down in price. A 42" Plasma was $26,000

I actually just did a bunch of research on this subject as I'm thinking about picking one up. From I read it's tough to see the difference between a good quality LCD and plasma. LCD's seem to have a longer lifespan and are much lighter, plus they require less power to operate. I read a few reports that said the plasma TV's have a little bit better contrast between bright whites and dark blacks.

Consumer Reports preferred the Panasonic plasmas over just about everything else, for whatever that's worth.

I have both Over the Air and DirectTv, and The over the air stuff is awesome, even though few of the channels now run uncompressed HD, they did a few years ago, but now they are running multiple channels(hence 7-1,7-2,7-3 for example). So it's not a alot better than DirectTv anymore.
On another note HD on video is way nicer than HD film, to me at least. I just prefer the video look over the grainy film look.
Come and get one in the yarbles, if you have any yarbles, you yunick jelly thou!

Myself, like others, will eventually upgrade to one or the other. You gotta be a individual or family that spends alot of time watching TV/movies or host alot parties and such, to spend big bucks on the more exspensive TV's/monitors. Personally, before I'll spend $4,000 on a TV/monitor, I'll use the money on other toys, like a custom guitar. Nonetheless, to each their own.
