Interesting article:

I saw this a few months ago, looks like a winner if everyone gets on the same page. I doubt that will happen though. Only problem I see is what happens if it gets broken or stolen? The family would then have to buy another and many of those families wouldn't be able afford another... good idea though.

            Had a $100 lapdance once, glad I wasn't paying.

Saw Nick Negroponte on Charlie Rose the other night & was pretty impressed w/ what he had to say about their plan, how it would be implemented initially, then ramped up. Some people's reaction will obviously be "What about food, medicine, & more pressing immediate needs?" but I think education & the "teach a man to fish" philosophy are the only way to solve the problems of the 3rd world.

With that hand crank it looks more like some high tech hurdy gurdy box.

I don't know much about this and I'm at MIT, but the first thing that struck my mind is...

I want one of those hand cranks for MY laptop. Damn battery running out is annoying as hell

Yep but good governance and political stability are mandatory precursors to any real and lasting change in most of the world. This is a nice idea but it won't have the impact they're hoping for.

Ya know, handing out technology to backward peoples is what got this world in the crap state that its in. Sounds harsh, but its true. Someone will figure how to detonate car bombs or something with that thing. So, I guess Im agreeing with YAO.

Good point, but maybe it will take an educated populace to demand good governance & stability. Chicken/egg argument. I think the oppressive regimes in the really screwed up places will see the program as a threat & it will be a non-starter.
