• Office xp question

I know that a few of the guys here work for microsoft so I figured that Id ask here. I have 3 computers in my house. Mine and my sons and my daughters. We all have winxp, either home or pro. I have office xp on my computer. The kids both have office 2000. My daughter needs to have the extra features and options in powerpoint xp that 2000 doesnt have, for her college project. I dont want her on my computer so I was thinking of just installing my office xp on her machine. Is this ok? Will it work? or will I have a problem when windows wants to activate it. Im afraid that doing this might mess up my installation by putting my serial number on some blacklist or something like that. I mean do I really have to buy 3 copies of office xp if I own 3 computers? And why did dell stop putting an office suite like works on their computers and just give me crappy wordperfect? Also, Ive heard of student deals or bundles for office and windows xp. Do these things still exist?

Re: Office xp question

Student deals (Academic versions) require a valid student ID (and probably have to be done through the school).

The reason Dells now come with WerdPerfekt instead of MS Orifice is because MS was giving away their versions of the same software everyone else was selling to make a living, and was one of the main points in the anti-trust lawsuits.
MS made all their money on Windows and the Visual Studio suites, and could give away everything else and not miss it. Corel HAD to sell Wordperfect to make a living, so MS was basically screwing them and everyone else.

Trust me, I know it sucks - I did technical/setup manuals in Quattro Pro 9 and the company only had Excel, and the diagrams wouldn't import properly.
Implicit compatability should have been included in the Supreme Court's ruling, and it should have been applied to ALL of them so that any document created in one app can be opened in another app just like it was made in that app.

Anyhoo, per MS's EULA, yes you have to buy one separate version of Office for each computer.

What specific features of XP does she need that 2000 can't do, and has anyone (you or her) tried looking for add-ins (macros, plugins, etc) that do those things in 2000?
Or is it simply "keeping up with the Jonses"?

Re: Office xp question

Thanks for the info. She is taking a computer course in college that basically the assignments are to create a powerpoint presentation from a set of directions but she has to remember how to implement the directions in the program like she learned in class. She says that powerpoint 2000 doesnt have some of the same options in the menus like the program that the book uses for illustration. I believe the book uses office 2004. She went on my computer and checked it out and everything was just like the book had illustrated. Will there be a problem if I uninstall it from my machine and then put it on hers? I think thats what Im going to do. I rarely use it anyway so 2000 should be fine for me. She has a college student ID. I guess I will have her check at the college bookstore about the student versions. Thanks for the reply.

As long as you haven't registered it, or as long as she doesn't register it, she shouldn't have any problems as far as MS's spybots killing her computer

Why don't you just bury all your porn in a passworded folder and let her use your computer?

Re: Office xp question

A simple solution here is for you to create an account for your daughter on the machine that has Office XP on it. You can make it a limited user account so she can't install anything - Office works fine with limited user accounts.

If you don't want her to physically use your computer then she can connect to it via terminal services. It's trivial to enable and use. Let me know if you need help with that option.

Download the trial version of XP, then get a manual firewall program and block the file executable for Office XP. it will never ask you to register to buy it.

Yeah, I physically dont want her on my computer. If I leave it on then the kids have a field day when Im not around. I end up with spyware and all sorts of new icons in my tray. So, I went to install it on her computer and it says that I can use it 50 times before I have to activate it. I guess that will get her through her project for now but I will be looking to get the student thing for her. She's got 3.5 more years of this so I figure it will be worth it. What the heck, they charge over 100 bucks for a book these days at the book store. I will check ebay too. Thanks for the help.

You could try OpenOffice, its free and is just as good as office xp. I got through my Computer class with it, my Statistic class, and my Financial Account class.

Most of the commands are similar to office xps too!

Re: Office xp question

I saw that. The class that shes taking now goes by a book and cd that uses the latest ms office suite as an example. The office 2000 simply had some different menus and didnt work exactly the same as what the cd showed her to do. Shes not the best at adapting, ya know. I found someone on ebay selling the student edition of office 2003 for $79. It claims that it has a 3 user license too. That means that I could put it on all 3 of my computers with no problems? Also, the guy is in canada. Will the software be any different? I know its in English. will there be any registration problem with that?

Quick edit. Thanks for the link SS.

Ummmm, no.

Get her the student version. Microsoft practically gives away Office to students.

Alright, here we go. First off, Microsoft has never given away Office and never will. Microsoft basicly built a bigger better cheaper mouse trap and they were unlucky enough to do it in the justiction of a California court. There basicly hasn't been an operating system or until recently even a web browser to compete with the end customer features that Windows has. Microsoft should have stood up and said if you are gonna sue us over the fact that we bundle IE with Windows, we are gonna give away every other piece of software we make and make windows only compatible with our software.
