I discharge all static I've built up before touching anything, trust me

Since the MB is new and the video card is new, I went ahead and ordered a new CPU. If this doesn't work you can expect to see a 980Gig 3.2GHz 2GB RAM Music/Video production PC listed in the Classifieds

Re: So if your computer\'s processor dies...

I just replaced my MB and CPU a few months ago. I was using my computer one night and heard a clunk inside my computer and a few minutes later it shut down and would only power on for a minute or so. Come to find out, one of the clamps that hold the fan to the CPU had broken and fallin off!

How many Hard drives do you have? When you said 7, did you mean that you have 2 and then partitioned them to 7 or do you actually have 7? I have a 60Gig as C drive and I have a 250Gig partitioned into 5, 50Gig drives... My old MB was 1.6Ghz so it was time to upgrade anyway. Now it's 3.0Ghz and 768Ram. I still need to get a new Video Card (Radeon) and I wanted to bump the Ram to 2 Gigs. Is that Ram on eBay for $40 per Gig a good deal? I don't know if Ram can be junk or not, so I was thinking about buying it. It sure beats paying $200 per Gig! Not trying to hijack your thread Newc, sorry....

depends on the chips used. kingston is the real deal in most cases , although they use sub spec, or self stamped chips in many cases too. what is the paart number on the actual chip on the modules in your computer, i'll tell ya.$40.00 sounds awfully cheap for major chips like samsung, micron, or infineon, hynix, etc. etc.

still too cheap for what the raw chip costs for brand new factory sealed chips. now, there can be plenty of guys building with sub spec or half goods, 3 quarter goods, i used to be one of them. i was direct with a manufacturererererer, and i was getting their sub spec stuff real cheap. when chips were going for $54.00, i was getting them for $30.00, thousands at a time. we'd build them up and send 'em out everyday for years. they were the golden years. i wouldn't be surprised if there are 1 gigs out there for $52.00, knowing what can go on, i just doubt they are major chips or the warranty is not so hot, i could be trotally wrong, but i don't think i am. i am broke, so there you have it-lol

ask the cat for the part number off the actual chip on the module itself. i'll tell you right away what it is. i sold this stuff for 90 years now.

Sounds like something that happened to me when I was building my new machine recently. Try pulling the power from the CPU and mobo, reseat it. I'm sure you know the CPU power for P4's is the small square 4 pin connector.

I didn't read ALL the posts here so I don't know if you tried it already or not.

It could be alot of things.
CPU
Motherboard
Ram
Power supply
I had a bad modem card once that messed up my entire system.
The best way to check is to systematically remove every thing one by one and hope the problem goes away.

Correct. It could be ANY device keeping your system from posting. Remove them all one by one untill it boots or you are left with motherboard, processor and ram.

Re: So if your computer\'s processor dies...

Sorry, make that 8 totally separate drives.
I'll hafta pull them out and see, but I think they're:

13 GB System drive (so if it crashes it crashes alone )
20 GB
40 GB
60 GB
2 180 GB
2 250 GB (one temporarily mounted in an external USB housing so I can use it with my laptop until I get the PC up and running - normally I have the 60 GB in the USB case)

Which equals 993 - 7 GB away from a Terabyte
I'm pretty sure I've got one of those wrong, cuz I know I've only got 980 GB, but I'm definitely looking at 8 hard drives including the one in the USB case.
Plus a Dual-Layer DVD-RW/CD-RW drive.

Of those, I think the 20, 40, and the 2 180s are almost full. I use one 250 for nothing but Video and the other one for nothing but Audio (recording and such), so they've got plenty of room left.
My 3D apps and models and games and such are on the other drives.

I don't think I have any of them partitioned (XP Home), but at one time I had all drive letters except B (which is reserved for a secondary floppy).
That was on my dual-boot 95/NT system and I had two or three huge drives (plus the CD and Zip) but due to the partition limits of 95, I had to split them into 2 GB partitions.

I guess I shoulda went ahead and got another 20 GB for my system drive since I'll hafta reinstall XP anyway when the new chip gets here

I hope you are right Newc, but odds are it is not the processor. I usually see 10 to 20 Motherboards go before I see a Processor go and about the same with Ram & modems.

We cannot guarantee brand, as our supplier supplies us with what he has in stock. It is OEM. Thanks!

then it's a not a major full spec chip. make sure your warranty is for at least a year.30 days might not do it.
