• How hard is it to pack a guitar?

Is this some sort of fucking mystery?

Why is it when I buy a guitar from a store making a profit that got it from some company making a profit that neither can pack the guitar properly yet when I buy a guitar from some random dude that's taking a bath on a guitar (or maybe breaking even) he packs it like it matters to him that I receive the guitar in one piece?

This message goes out to Jackson, Ibanez, Fender, etc. and just about every dealer I've dealt with (yes, including the beloved ones).

I've bought a number of brand spankin' new guitars in the last couple years from a variety of brands and a variety of dealers.

In fact, I got a brand new acoustic guitar in the mail yesterday. It's a damn good thing I ordered the case to go with it because there is no doubt in my mind I would have received a box of green toothpicks if I didn't. And thankfully the guitar was snug in the case. Because the case was just rattling around loose in the box. There was a single strip of that balloon bag stuff in there. It was a joke. The box was busted open from obviously having the case thrash it open. My wife said the UPS driver was shitting a brick apparently because it looked so bad. She called me immediately said she thought I was gonna be disappointed - she was sure the thing was going to be hosed.

It looked to me that this is how it came from the factory. It got lucky on the first part of it's journey so the dealer decided to roll the dice and ship it that way to me. Gee thanks.

And it's not just that guitar yesterday. Every single brand new Jackson, Charvel, and Fender guitar I've bought online was packed with the roll the dice strategy. And these weren't $79 guitars (not that that would be an excuse).

Sheesh, I'm willing to spring for the extra 5 or 10 bucks for some freakin' packing peanuts for a purchase like this.

Now contrast that with the last couple guitars I got from forum members and/or Ebay. The guitars are padded inside the case, the neck and headstock are protected, and there is some stuffing in the box so the case doesn't freakin' rattle around.

Two companies do get an honorable mention though - Line 6 and Taylor. They actually design their boxes so that the guitar doesn't freakin' move around. And the Taylors come with excellent cases on top of it.
I want REAL change. I want dead bodies littering the capitol.

I've bought a couple guitars from MusicYo. They do a great packing job.

I LOVE the Taylor boxes AND Taylor cases. The Taylor boxes don't even NEED to be stuffed with peanuts or bubble wrap because they have those supporting braces inside, holding the case absolutely still. I received my Taylor K14c in one, and shipped out my old Takamine EF385C-12 to Kennslp in one of them too.

It's a metter of cost. When you do that many guitars, it costs more to give them extra packing than it would to cover the damages of not having the extra packing.

I hear ya tim, it's flat out a crime in which how guitars are packed from most dealers and companies. You would think some dealers would at least offer the "upgrade to better packing option" although in my mind it should not have to be an "upgrade". It seems to me that it's the mighty dollar that wins once again....

It's funny you mention that about how just regular guys/gals pack the guitars safely for a hurricane yet you get one from someone who actually creates these pieces, it's almost as if they couldn't give a sh!t about it. I mean some of these are "one off" pieces and tossed in a box with a wish and a prayer.....

That clinched it for me. I'll never order a guitar from you with that attitude. When someone is spending hundreds and very often thousands of dollars on an instrument that they waited weeks, months, or even years to get you could go the distance and pack the thing well. Also note that I said I would be willing to pay the extra 5 bucks for some packing peanuts.

Re: How hard is it to pack a guitar?

Best carton I've ever received was a Fernandes - PLYWOOD lining all around

Yeah, plywood's crap and it was only like 1/8" thick, but you wouldn't believe how strong that carton was.

How about newspaper? Everybody gets a newspaper. Save 'em to use as packing material. You're gonna throw 'em out anyway right? Right.

I guess some people think that a hardshell case is all you need to ship a guitar in, and a box is just to keep the case from getting scuffed up.
While hardshell cases are designed to protect a guitar during travel, they're also designed for the benefit of MUSICIANS who KNOW HOW TO TREAT A GUITAR! UPS don't care - it goes on a belt and dropped into a truck, then tossed out of a truck onto a belt, then tossed into a pile of other boxes.

Conversely, I got one in once where the case was taped up and the shipping label stuck right on the case itself - no box, no nothing. Guitar was ok. And it was a cheap Alligator-skinned Explorer-shaped case like Hondo uses.
I've also shipped guitars in the case wrapped in 2 rolls of shipping paper and taped up like Amenhotep. One went to Tokyo and got there with no problem in less than a week.

Remind me to never buy a guitar from you bro. You're general attitude on this board stinks. This clinches it for me. I can't believe that you as a dealer on this board, would post a statement like that. I'm with Tim on this one....TOTAL

Re: How hard is it to pack a guitar?

I think Matt was referring to the manufacturers point of view, not the dealers.
Manufacturers like to ship several cases in one large carton and several guitars in one large carton, as opposed to guitars in cases in one large carton.

I think Matt was referring to manufacturers and distributors, not himself as a dealer. OSG is a cool dude but his typing is very dry.

All i've seen from Matt is sarcasm and disrespectful statements to many of the board members, myself included.
Not once have i heard those types of things from Matt (Matts Music) or Scott @ Vwhall. If you are trying to be a business man, you have to choose what types of posts you make. ESPECIALLY if you sell guitars and say that it's easier to pay the insurance or whatever rather than packing guitars. Not a very good way to put confidence in someone. Would Matt or Scott make a post like that? I think not.....
My statement stands....

That's the same conclusion I came to. It was not a big jump - no leg breaker there.
