Caffeine is another! It's kind of a link to cigarettes for me, but, I won't pile too much on my plate right now, but it'll be soon. [img]/images/graemlins/wink.gif[/img]

Congrats also on 3 years. I don't want to get to the point where something scares me to quit, so quitting has been weighing on my mind for a while now.

stopping isn't really that hard... did so three times already.

the longest I managed to do was nine months. and what helped me out a lot was sports there.
I did sports too before, some jogging together with a friend of mine, and once I stopped smoking I extremely felt the air flowing again!! this was a lot of motivation for me!!
before I always had to take a break every km and spit some black aliens into the bushes, but after a month I never saw one again!

do something that makes you feel the progress!! either sports or singing (another thing that worked much better for me in my none smoker-days) or whatever works for you.
this way you can motivate yourself.

the most problematic thing for me in not smoking is social-whise. most friend I have smoke, and when I have break in university between my lessons I use to hang out with smokers.

but the hard desire-phase didn't take that long for me. I guess it was about two weeks, then I felt perfect, got a couple of bad days again after a month and then I was thru.


now seriously; stopping smoking is not the hardest thing, but not starting again is!!

I still can't believe I was stupid enough to do after nine months (nothing against you three-year-break guys... [img]/images/graemlins/laugh.gif[/img] ), but I guess I just felt too secure about this.
"you're over it, one cig won't kill ya" that's what this mean little creature in my ear told me, never listen to it once it starts talking to you man!!!


I really envy these people who can smoke one cig on a party and never again for the next month. I've got a friend who is able to do so and I can't get it.

Cold Turkey is an English phrase that means stopping something cold, as in without any help...just quitting.

I quit cold turkey two years ago on Thanksgiving. No pun intended.
It was and still is a bitch sometimes.
I smoked for 20 years and for the longest time, it was just me and my wife. She doesn't smoke btw.
When my daughter came along, I went and had an MRI done on my lungs and they are in great shape... doc said it's best to quit while I'm ahead.
My drive that keeps me smoke free is my daughter.
I want to be there for her as she's growing up.
I want to be there when she graduates from HS... then college if she wants to go.
I want to walk her down the isle when she gets married.
These are all the things that I thought about when I looked into her eyes and held her in my arms.
This is what keeps me from lighting up everyday.
I have pictures of her everywhere. When I think about having a smoke, all I have to do is look up. There's at least 20 pics of here in my cube at work.
My wife and I tried very hard to have her and I told myself that I will always be there for her.
She's almost 3 years old now...
Look at that face and tell me that wouldn't be motivation enough. [img]/images/graemlins/grin.gif[/img]

That's a hoot. It's funny how we take our colloquialisms for granted, such as "cold turkey." I had a friend from the Phillipines who learned english from reading the bible and let me tell you he had some neat phrases.

He was pissed at me one day for something and he told me to "cast down yourself from a great wall." [img]/images/graemlins/laugh.gif[/img]

On topic, I have never smoked so I can't empathize with you guys but I applaud anyone who has the will power to overcome any addiction. [img]/images/graemlins/toast.gif[/img]

Your daughter is very cute and an excellent reason for you to stop. 2 years also is a long time and congrats.

I have 3 sons, 20, 23 & 26. The two younger ones smoke, but are no longer in the house, so it's a good time to give it a honest try.
