• Deep Purple help

Yesterday I heard Child in Time in live version. It was the recording, where one fan shoots in the head during the last calm section of the song.

Does anyone have any info, when was the concert taken and where? Is there any live footage of that gig or a documentary regarding that suicide and Deep Purple?

hadn't heard that one. But I did a quick google search for it, and saw a couple of theories that the sound was actually a mic stand falling over. Is there any evidence that someone actually topped themselves?

I'm not saying it didn't happen, but Purple has been my favorite band since about 1969. If it's factual, I can't believe I'm just now hearing about it. Hey Tommy! Good to see ya! Ian Gillan is on the Made In Japan CD.

I know the part you mean, and I always thought that it was the sound of Jon Lord's Hammond being rocked/kicked/stabbed or otherwise assaulted!

I asked my friend about it, which is a so called Deep Purple expert. He told me that the sound, similar to a gun shot, is acutally Lord switching between the power on Hammond. And that theory is kind of official. If someone would commit suicide on the gig, I think the band would stop playing or they wouldn't get such ovation than they did.

That sounds like one of those crazy stories everybody used to tell when they were baked out of their minds...

I'm a big Purple fan, and the only violence I ever heard of at one of their shows was a riot in Germany around '71, I believe. Lots of property damage, but no one was killed.

                    Re: Deep Purple help

I honestly don't know too much about Deep Purple, but I am sure something like that would have made VH1's "Behind the Music" or one of their "Top 100 Crazy Concert Shit" lists or something...

They never did a Behind the Music on Deep Purple, unfortunately. One of the biggest rock bands not to have gotten one of those or the related "Legends" series. People today forget just how big DP was in the mid-70s.

You know, now that you mention it, I remember something about Lord and his "organ."

                          Re: Deep Purple help

Deaths at rock concerts are usually well-documented, like the fan killed at Altamont at the Stones show, the Who fans that were trampled when the doors opened (that almost eliminated general admission shows) and such. It really seems such a thing would've been very publicized. I don't see how you'd get a gun into an arena when they frisk you before you can enter.

Ron will probably be along shortly with a Snopes debunking

That's a real shame... It seems every 80's hair band has had one of those shows and Deep Purple is far more deserving than a lot of those guys (IMHO, according to historical significance). I could of sworn I've seen something about DP on VH1, maybe it was about Blackmore on one of their guitarist countdowns or "Smoke On the Water" in one of their other countdowns. Come to think of it, does VH1 play music anymore or just do countdown shows?
