When the Christian fundamentalists start strapping on C4 belts and blowing themselves up in shopping centers I'll agree with you guys. Until then you're waaaaaaay overboard comparing religious fundamentalists here with those in the Middle East.

When's the last time an abortion clinic was bombed? That usually makes the news and I can't recall an incident in years. Meanwhile we hear of suicide bombers or IEDs nearly every day...

When it happens do the bombings result primarily in property damage or are large numbers of people, including bystanders who happen to be merely passing by at the wrong time, killed? Were any car bombs? How many Christian militant bomb making factories have been discovered in the US?

My point is only that merely because things of that nature have happened in the past does not mean you can equate the situations. Scale and frequency matter very much.

I'm too lazy to go looking for the statistics for all the violence committed by Christians, Jews, and other non-Middle Eastern and Muslin folks out there but I suspect the numbers would be plenty appalling and the reasons for the violence no more or less senseless than these acts of terrorism.

People here attack each other for video game consoles, kill each other for wearing a blue bandana, priests and day care workers rape little boys, shoot each other for a bad decision in traffic, rape dozens of prostitutes and kill them, carve up women and store them in their freezer, kill John Lennon, etc.

Those terrorists are scum sucking pieces of shit and should be slaughtered but to condemn a people, religion, nation, or region for the acts of a relative minority is sad. And given how violent our own society is I think it's a bit of the pot calling the kettle black.

I'm not going to get into a whole political thing, but my prediction is that the USA will beat the Israelis to the punch and take out the Iranian nuclear facilities next year, since we have the capability to do it more effectively. I wouldn't say by Feb. 1, but soon. The Iranians have undoubtedly spread their facilities across the country and 'hardened' them, but we have bunker-busters for that purpose, and taking out just half of their facilities would seriously damage their nuclear program, I'd have to think. I do not think that we will attempt to occupy the country, after all of the difficulty in Iraq.

Unfortunately, there's every indication that the acts of the terrorists enjoy widespread support in the Islamic world, as well as the sponsorship of several of the larger Islamic states. In many ways, this is a clash of civilizations.

And there is a huge qualitative difference between random street or domestic violence and state-sanctioned terrorism. We're all human and imperfect, but I refuse to engage in the sort of self-loathing and moral relativism that says that we in the West must be every bit as bad as the Islamist militants--because we're not. Period.
