  • An opportunity of a lifetime!!!

I have an opportunity to go to Les Paul's house to finally meet him. I knew that he lived in my town, and I finally ran into someone that is friends with him. He told me that anytime I wanted to head over there, it would be cool. He told me that he has a massive collection of Gibsons (as you could well imagine) and that he's seen #001 (that's the first electric guitar) that's in his living room. He said that The Smithsonian was up from Washington, DC a few months ago looking to use Les' priceless collection in a display. Les told them that the only stipulation would be if it remained on display forever. They said that the display would only be up for a few years, and so Les declined the offer.

He plays the Iridium club in NYC every Monday night still. Many stars from the music world show up unannounced to catch him perform. Zakk Wylde was one, and also Paul McCartney!

He's lived with his girlfriend who's about 65 (Les is 91) since his wife Mary Ford died.

One story I can share is that this guy I know also brought another guy to meet Les earlier this year to have his Epiphone autographed. The guitar had the words 'Les Paul' model on the box, but no sign of 'Les Paul' on the actual guitar. When Les saw this, he wasn't too thrilled. So at 10 o' clock at night, he asked his girlfriend to get this guy 'Tom' on the phone. She quickly acknowledged and got on the horn. The next thing you know, Les was talking with Tom Calderone, the president of Gibson guitars. Afterall, Les is the backbone of Gibson's line.

    Stay tuned....this should get good!

I'd like to meet him, but I don't think I'll have the chance before he goes to the great gig in the sky.

I got a 6-disc set a while back of all the Les Paul & Mary Ford albums, and the two he did with Chet Atkins.
The Mary Ford stuff is heavily effected - almost no "straight" guitar on it - it's mostly all pitch-shifted and delayed and stuff like that to make it sound NOT like a guitar.
I want to depart this world the same way I arrived; screaming and covered in someone else's blood

Yes, he's lived in Mahwah since the early 50's. I was also told that he also invented the vinyl record press. Is that true? I'll guess I'll have to ask him about that.

Yeah, time is not on Les' side and I've always known that if it didn't happen real soon, then I'd miss out forever. He's still as sharp as a tack and I heard that he's a total night owl, going to sleep at 4-5 in the morning and waking up in the mid-afternoon. My friend said that Sunday-Tuesday is no good, so we'll arrange to meet him (my wife and I) during one of the remaining 4 nights. I'm really looking forward to meeting him finally....

I used to work for Paul Ash (one of the owners of SamAsh) and his wife Cobie. He used to tell me about his birthday parties they go to every year, said everyone you can imagine is there. Lotta ass kissers he said, but also a lot of genuine fans who had a good connection to get there. Gotta love that guy, I feel so bad to know what's gonna happen when his nephews take complete control of the company...

Les also invented the delay and multitrack recording and a ton of other things!

I'm not the star struck kinda guy, generally don't give a fuck, I have been in the room with celeberties that most people would get all giddy over, I don't bother wasting my time or theirs to meet them, they are just people. However meeting Les Paul would be one I'd take the time to meet or shake his hand. Aside from the obvious the man is a great guitar player and brought so much technology we take for granted today.
