I had the same problem. I had to cut out the hat and re-paste it and then do some clean-up. I know there is some sort of trick... but I couldn't fig it out.
There's a transparent button in paint but that didn't work.

You have to set your primary color to the color that you want transparent. (the color for the right mouse button)
