• What do you know about beds?

ok, to make a long story short, let's just say we had a "wet" christmas this morning as our waterbed decided to say goodbye, when I put my elbow through it this morning..

We sleep on the second floor and I've decided I do not need the fear of having water destroy my home so we're going with a normal mattress and boxspring type bed. I have no idea what we need and there are so many different types out there. Can someone help with this?

I'm sure it's going to be a huge adjustment since we've had a waterbed for 16 years (king size-full wave) so I'm not sure what to go with.

Any suggestions??

Thanks in advance and I hope you're all having a wonderful Christmas-

Re: What do you know about beds?

When my wife and I moved to Dallas last year we, I mean she, decided it was time to get rid of my waterbed I had for years. We gave it to a friend of the family's 18 year old so I know it got a proper home. Anyway, we ended up getting a Sealy Bed with the pillow top and I couldn't be happier. It was hard at first but I really like the mattress and it feels good. It cost an arm and leg but was well worth it. We bought ours from Rooms To Go.

Sealy or Serta. You can try that Sleepnumber thing if you wanna give a review

Of course, a guy your age might oughta look into a Craftmatic model II

Re: What do you know about beds?

My next bed will be a tempurpedic, or other comparable memory foam brand. They may be expensive, but a good's night sleep is priceless.

Although, I haven't ever had sex on a water bed. I'll have to try that sometime.....

Yes!! Oh heavens, yes! The tempurpedics kick major major ass. It will be weird for you at first if you go with that, since you're used to a wavy waterbed. But they are soooo comfy.
If you like to eat in bed or get real rowdy, the tempurs are the way to go. Um... trust me.
Otherwise, Sealy and Sertas are good too. Then get a memory foam topper and throw it on top.

Goodluck!

Re: What do you know about beds?

I'm on my 2nd mattress in 7 years. Went from a queen to a king.

Our queen cost like $1500 on sale and was great at frist. SUPER thick with a pillow top. After about 2 years, the top wasn't so thick anymore and the softness became an annoyance. Anytime I slept on my back, I got major lower back soreness. My wife's back hurt every day no matter what side she slept on. I learned that for me, soft isn't better.

Our king bed is firmer and I love it. No more soreness. We paid probably around $850 for it on sale.

Consumer Reports reviewed tons of mattresses a few months ago from cheap to some that cost almost $5000. What they found is that no matter the price, someone will always find it uncomfortable. Higher cost *usually* gets you more stiching, more coils, etc but even low end mattresses have way more coils that they used to a few years ago. Many of the "features" like bacon wrapped coils housed in lambskin condoms aren't noticeable. Also many stores like Macy's carry their own line of a brand that will be different than the same brand sold at a mattress store. There isn't an apples to apples comparison when shopping from store to store unless you are comparing prices on the exact same model.

Some people in the reivew loved the Tempurpedic, others said it felt like sleeping on wet sand.

A good friend of mine's family started and owns one of the Bay Area's largest and most successful mattress dealers. He said the markup is probably double to triple what the mattress actually costs. They're always willing to deal and at the end of the month they'll give you great deals. We bought our king mattress and a bed frame from them and they threw in my son's twin mattress.

Take a LOT of time in the mattress stores and see if they have a 30 or 60 day exchange policy.

[/ QUOTE ] I don't think they are that expensive. Here's what this poor old trailer guy did. When I lived in the House from Hell, I slept on a futon mattress. When I bought my trailer, I salvaged an old box/mat and frame. I put the futon mat on top of the regular mat. It is so comfy. And I am 6'6" and 260. No backaches or anything. The bugs went away after awhile. So instead of paying $2000 for a bed, I bought 10 guitars. I AM a sad monkey beater.
