That Seagate is sweet & would be a great deal, but that guy's shipping prices are completely insane. $34 to ship that drive? Shipping is more than the BIN for a lot of his items.

Sweet deals there, but I try not to mix brands anymore - I had a Quantum Bigfoot years ago that simply would not play well with my WDs. Put it in a machine by itself and it ran just fine.

And my mobo only has 2 SATA connectors, and 4 IDE conectors (with the 2-port card). IDE works fine for me for video and audio transfer/recording and such. I'll worry about speed when it becomes a definable issue for me

Re: 250 Gig drives for $95!!!!

5400rmp IDE is perfectly fine for single stream audio and video storage/playback, most of them can play 3 or 4 full frame video files simultaneously without a problem... Anything with a faster spin will have a higher probability of breaking/wearing faster.

SATA is only really necessary for a primary system drive, or secondary drive if it has an active swap file. And most external enclosures do not support SATA, and you would need a SATA i/o port on the back of your computer, if you wanted to use one externally.

In all my years of installing hard drives in systems for customers and having to warranty them, there is only one name we trust and that is Western Digital. Sorry if I offend anyone's favorite brand, but over the last 9 years Western Digital has had the best results.

My last batch of 10 Seagate 60 gig drives only had 3 outlive the warranty. Sure they send you a replacement drive, but it has a lovely "RECONDITIONED" sticker on it and if memory serves, 1/2 of those died too.

Western digital fan here as well.

Had lotsa bad Seagates in my time and only recently have used a couple new ones agian. First in quite a few years. They seem to be hanging... But, it's only been two months for them, haha...

Just used two Hitachi SATA drives in a system and one lasted a month and crapped out.

I use WD and Maxtor.
WD drives for system and active files and Maxtor drives for storage.
I have two Maxtor drives that have been running in my system daily for the last 6 years. No issues ever.
My WD drives are fairly new, so I haven't had a chance to beat them up yet.

I've used WD drives since I built my first computer in '97 - haven't really had any non-OS-induced issues
Had a used one from WlaMart that was crap (didn't realise it was a return til we got it home - found the original shrink-wrap in the bottom of the box) but WD sent us a replacement that was bigger

And I'm pretty sure my current HD issue is an XP thing - appears the $Volume file was corrupted.

Then again, I DO have a Maxtor 60GB drive in here as well (from an AKAI DPS12) - could be causing trouble
