I'd heard early today that the mixup was due to someone "overhearing" a report from cellphone call originating from a "relayed" message from the rescuers at the mine.

Sounds like an easy mixup and people are just human. They make mistakes. And they are all scrambling to get the story first, or in other words, keep their jobs.

Just sucks horribly that peoples hopes for loved ones were in the balance. I can't imagine their anguish at all this.

Very sad outcome to this. They did all the right things to try and survive but didn't make it. God rest their souls and comfort their loved ones.

They had an interview on the news this morning with a gentleman that was in the church (who is apparentently a Senator), it was the CEO of mining company that made the announcement to the people in the church. Furthermore, the Senator said that the CEO apparently knew within 20 minutes of making that announcement that he was wrong yet it took 3 hours to notify the families. It doesn't sound like the media is to blame here.

That is what I saw as well Tim. Granted the press could have waited, but given the time frame, public interest etc. they in my opinion should not be blamed.

I still gotta blame the media. It's all about accountability. You hear someone say something without verification, then blab it out to the public is not acceptable, nor is it an excuse. [img]/images/graemlins/nono.gif[/img]

Hell, next thing you know know, someone will get on the radio and start telling a story about aliens attacking the world, and before you know it, pandimonium breaks out.

Both are wrong, CEO and media.


I may be a little prejudice also against the media because of their coverage in Afghanistan and Iraq. Our guys can't do their job without being under the scrutiny of a media moron. They're out to make us look bad, anyway they can. I say give them 3 days to get out or fen for themselves. No protection, then we'll see what balls they really have. Regardless, the families of the miners suffer. Any news on the one that survived?

They do that crap all the time. It's not about the people or their lives and it's not about any tragic situation. It's about the story and being the first to deliver it. Ratings and nothing else.

The media did the same thing several years ago when Tommy Lee Jones was hurt in a horse riding accident. They immediately said he was going to be just like Christopher Reeve. The truth of it was he was only sustained minor injuries from the fall.

I still have a news paper saying Gore won the 2000 election...

humans always have the need to BLAME ..

We can't accept that fact that some things just get fucked up sometimes..Things don't always go perfectly no matter what the circumstances..The War, Katrina..this shit..etc

Just the same speculation and blaming BS..I don't watch the news anymore..for this reason

So I get it here..filterd thru you guys...which is just the same crap I hear on the news..blame and speculation.

The only thing I could say is that this is a tragedy..and nothing more...shit will happen and we will blame.

I mentioned New Years ..because this is just the beginning for many things to come..and we will blame.

New Years whiskey will be used by their families to kill the pain..and not to celebrate...and we blame.

Things are gonna happen and its just fukked up sometimes, but when someone comes out and says your loved ones are ok, then a couple hours later says 'April Fools', then that fuked.

That wasn't some random yahoo blabbing - they got their "facts" from the fucking CEO of the company. At that point, he was the defacto spokesman for the situation really. The media did not walk into that church and tell those people their loved ones were fine, the knucklehead CEO did - the same person undoubtedly and ultimately responsible for the hundreds of safety violations those workers had to contend with including 40+ in December alone. Don't lay this tragedy on the media.

It's unfortunate that the media recieved the wrong info..they report the info that is provided..that's what they do..I can't blame them.

we should take what is repoted with a grain of salt these days..

we are in war because I misinformation..but we are..and now have to finish what is started.

Any profession, be it law inforcement , doctors , lawers , media the prez and so on can only work with and act on the complaints provided.

we are never proactive ..it's the American way.
